IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often argued that all undergraduate students should be required to spend some time studying abroad or completing a work placement. I believe that the advantages of this policy would outweigh its disadvantages because it can provide students with valuable practical skills and broader perspectives.
One major advantage of studying abroad or undertaking a work placement is that students can gain experience beyond the classroom. At university, students mainly acquire theoretical knowledge, whereas a workplace allows them to understand how this knowledge is applied in real situations. For example, an engineering student who works for a company may learn how to cooperate with colleagues, solve practical problems and manage deadlines. These skills can significantly improve their chances of finding employment after graduation.
Another benefit of studying in a foreign country is that students can become more independent and develop a better understanding of different cultures. Living away from home encourages young people to manage their own responsibilities and communicate with individuals from different backgrounds. Furthermore, exposure to another culture can help students become more open-minded and adaptable, which are increasingly important qualities in the modern workplace.
However, there are some disadvantages to this requirement. Some students may face financial difficulties because travelling abroad and paying for accommodation can be expensive. In addition, students with family responsibilities or other personal circumstances may find it difficult to spend several months away from home. Nevertheless, universities could reduce these problems by providing financial support and offering local work placements as an alternative to studying abroad.
In conclusion, although compulsory overseas study or work placements could create financial and personal difficulties for some students, I believe the benefits are greater. The practical experience, independence and cultural awareness gained through these opportunities can prepare graduates more effectively for their future careers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments regarding practical skills and personal development are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the engineering student scenario. You also acknowledge the counter-arguments regarding financial and personal difficulties, which demonstrates a balanced approach. The ideas are extended logically, and the conclusion effectively summarises your stance. To reach a higher band, you could further elaborate on the long-term societal benefits of such a policy to add even more depth to your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One major advantage', 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow of the argument is natural, and the reader is guided through your reasoning without any confusion. The structure is very solid and meets the requirements for a high band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'theoretical knowledge', 'modern workplace', and 'personal circumstances' are used accurately. You show an awareness of collocation and style, which makes the writing sound professional. While the vocabulary is appropriate and clear, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items, such as 'invaluable', 'holistic development', or 'mitigate the financial burden', to demonstrate a more flexible and nuanced command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'although... I believe...'). Your control over grammar and punctuation is strong, with the vast majority of sentences being error-free. The use of modal verbs and passive voice is accurate and contributes to the academic tone. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To move into the highest band, ensure that every sentence is perfectly polished, though your current level of accuracy is already very high and consistent.
