IELTS Writing Task 2 question

All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.

Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that all university students should spend some time studying abroad or completing a work placement. I strongly agree with this idea because such experiences can provide valuable skills and prepare students for their future careers. Although there are some disadvantages, I believe the advantages are greater.

One major benefit is that students can gain practical experience. University education mainly provides theoretical knowledge, while a work placement allows students to use this knowledge in real situations. As a result, they can develop important skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving. These skills can make graduates more confident and improve their chances of finding a good job after graduation.

Studying abroad also has important benefits. Students can experience a different culture, meet people from various backgrounds, and improve their language skills. Living away from home can also make young people more independent and responsible. For example, a student who spends six months in another country may learn how to manage money, solve daily problems, and communicate with people from different cultures.

However, this policy may create some difficulties. Studying or living abroad can be expensive, and some students may feel homesick or struggle to adapt to a new environment. In addition, a work placement may reduce the time available for academic study. Nevertheless, these problems can be reduced through financial support and well-planned programmes.

In conclusion, studying abroad or completing a work placement can provide students with practical skills, confidence, independence, and valuable cultural experience. Therefore, I believe the advantages of making this a part of every undergraduate course clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student addresses all parts of the prompt clearly and directly, taking a strong, well-defined position that the advantages of compulsory studying abroad or work placements outweigh the disadvantages. The response is properly structured with a clear introduction, body paragraphs dealing with benefits and drawbacks, and a concluding summary. Main ideas are relevant and supported with appropriate explanations, such as mentioning practical skills like communication and teamwork, as well as the personal growth gained from living away from home. While some arguments could be extended further to reach a higher band level, all prompt requirements are fully met, reflecting a solid Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introductory overview, moving to professional benefits, cultural and personal benefits, acknowledging counter-arguments, and concluding nicely. Cohesive devices are used effectively and appropriately, such as 'One major benefit', 'As a result', 'Studying abroad also has', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is well-managed and supports the flow of ideas well. There are no major issues with referencing or logical progression, making this a reliable Band 7 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Words and phrases such as 'theoretical knowledge', 'practical experience', 'independent and responsible', and 'financial support' are used accurately. There are also attempts at less common vocabulary items like 'undergraduate courses', 'work placement', and 'struggle to adapt'. While the lexical selection is generally accurate and communication is never impeded, the vocabulary lacks the greater flexibility, precision, and sophistication characteristic of Band 8. Word choices are natural, placing the response securely in the Band 6.5 to 7 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the essay, demonstrating control over grammatical forms. Examples of complex structures include 'Although there are some disadvantages, I believe the advantages are greater' and 'a student who spends six months in another country may learn how to...'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled well, and grammatical errors are virtually absent, resulting in a high proportion of error-free sentences. The control shown here matches the criteria for Band 7.
