Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of including a period of study abroad or a work placement in university undergraduate courses. A clear position is stated in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times repetitive. For instance, the discussion regarding cultural exposure and the example of the brother going to France are somewhat underdeveloped and contain unclear references ('at those time he absorbed culture and people of their'). The disadvantages are also briefly outlined without sufficient expansion or specific examples. Overall, the task is addressed adequately to meet the requirements of Band 5.5, but the ideas require greater depth and clearer supporting details to achieve a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay displays a basic overall structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division of ideas lacks seamless transitions. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical, inaccurate, or repetitive (e.g., 'One of key benefit', 'Additionally benefit', 'However', 'one more drawback'). Pronoun referencing is frequently unclear, such as 'This think also help the children to safe their life' and 'in the end he do this work finally', which makes following the logical progression challenging at times. While there is a discernible organizational framework, the overall progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and inadequate cohesive control, aligning best with a Band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive throughout the essay. The student attempts some less common items such as 'hotly debated topic', 'significant', and 'ambition', but these are often accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation (e.g., 'spending other countries', 'doing learn skill', 'desire grades', 'safe their life'). Spelling and morphological errors are also present, such as 'fore this work' and 'in conclusion'. Although the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general message, these persistent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay relies heavily on simple structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are widespread grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies ('Over recent year', 'he go France'), missing articles or prepositions ('going in abroad'), subject-verb agreement issues ('their have some notable drawback'), and fragmented clause structures ('after complete their inter he go France'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, with lower-case letters used for the pronoun 'i'. These frequent errors place a heavy strain on the reader and indicate that grammatical control is limited, corresponding to a Band 4.5.
