Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of university courses including a period of study abroad or work placement, and provides a clear position at the end stating that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are introduced throughout the body paragraphs, such as enhancing practical experience and causing potential pressure or health issues. However, many of these ideas are repetitive and underdeveloped. For instance, sentences like 'industrial placement will boost our knowledge and enhance our behaviours' are superficial and lack specific examples or deeper extension. Because the ideas are presented rather than fully elaborated, the response fits best at Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is organized into four distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by mechanical and repetitive use of cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'As a result'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in the conclusion where 'student who work on placement gives more opportunities' lacks precise pronoun agreement. Paragraphing is utilized to separate the contrasting viewpoints, but the overall logical flow is weakened by choppy, repetitive sentence structures, keeping the response at a Band 5 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including terms like 'practical experiences', 'theoritical knowledge', 'industrial placement', and 'career path'. However, there are numerous spelling errors ('universitie', 'Therfore', 'theoritical', 'Morever', 'undegraduate', 'somtimes', 'negtive', 'studyes', 'loard', 'disadvanatges'), awkward word choices ('boost our behaviours', 'work loard'), and repetition of basic words. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, the noticeable spelling and word-choice errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the score from reaching a Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and emerging complex sentence structures, such as 'Students who are working on industrial placement may affect their mental and physical health because too much work loard and presure.' However, grammatical accuracy is weak throughout the text, featuring frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('many universitie provide', 'work placement will provides', 'It will gives', 'advantages are outweigh'), preposition usage ('effect student's live'), and sentence fragments ('Sometimes it gives disadvantages of student's lives'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 5.
