IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In the past, universities do not have facilities such as abroad universities collaboration or work placement opportunities while studying. At present, some universities gave chance to deserving to undergraduates to opt for abroad study or chance of work placement while studying. Considering positive and negative both point I believe that advantages weightage is more.
My opinion has been influenced by some factors. The most noticeable reason is that students who opt for studying abroad from their university, they have chance to meet international students and professors. As result, they can adopt the foreign culture as well as learning new skills related to their domains. Now days, technology development is at peak level by using artificial intelligence. However, this kind of knowledge can give big opportunities for future carrier.
Moreover, students can also opt for work placements opportunities, there are many advantages of that such as, practical work gives hands on experience, confidence to accept challenges, practical work which is in line with study courses can gives best carrier opportunities. In addition, if students who cannot be able to manage study and internship together, they will get less marks in result which will directly affect their placement minimum criteria.
Based on my above opinions I strongly agree that all university undergraduate course have to include abroad study and internship programmes for the development of student. This will help students to think toward solution oriented, make them responsible and they can build unique personality.
In conclusion, university must start this kind of programmes which is very important for student's individual progress.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of including study abroad or work placements in undergraduate courses, and the writer clearly states a position that the advantages outweighing the disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is limited. For instance, the negative side is touched upon briefly ('if students who cannot be able to manage study and internship together, they will get less marks'), but it is not fully explored or contrasted robustly against the benefits. Similarly, points regarding international exposure and practical experience are introduced but lack detailed supporting examples. Because the prompt is addressed and a position is maintained despite under-development in places, this performance aligns well with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some basic organization with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, overall progression is hindered by awkward transitions and repetitive structuring. Cohesive devices are often inadequate or mechanical, such as the frequent reliance on 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion is weak. For example, the third paragraph abruptly shifts between work placement advantages and a disconnected warning about poor grades without smooth logical links. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'this kind of knowledge'. Overall, the arrangement of information reflects the descriptors for Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, with terms like 'undergraduates', 'artificial intelligence', and 'internship programmes'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices that recur throughout the text, such as 'abroad universities collaboration', 'gave chance to deserving to undergraduates', and 'weightage is more'. Additionally, collocation errors like 'future carrier' (instead of career) and 'solution oriented' demonstrate restricted control over less common vocabulary. While communication is generally maintained, the lexical limitations and inaccuracies firmly place this response at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside frequent faulty attempts at complex forms. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, such as tense usage ('In the past, universities do not have'), missing prepositions, and awkward verb phrases ('who cannot be able to manage'). Punctuation and article errors are also common. These frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader and impede fluent reading, matching the characteristics of Band 4.5, which rounds to Band 5.0 in standard whole-band reporting or represents a solid Band 5.0 profile due to frequent structural inaccuracies.
