IELTS Writing Task 2 question

All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.

Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

All the universities undergraduating students should spend some time studying abroad or they should do a work. I would argue that benefits of this development outweigh drawbacks.

First and formost, there are multiple advantages of giving a chance to students to study abroad or to do some work.

Such as, it contributes to increase the explore of the students. As, students interact with other individuals in other parts of the world or at their work place, consequently, they can better understand the culture of an area.

In the long term, it would be very beneficial for them as they will be having a basic knowledge regarding their field and work. On the other, hand if students already have spent some time regarding their work, in resulting their chances to be promoted will considerably rise. For instance, many students do internships during their studies, once they go in their relevent fields, they understand the work from their day first.

On the other hand, it also has some disadvantages. Some students belong to middle class families and they can not

afford to go to out of the country or do not have much resources to do internships without paying. As a result,,

most students take loan from bank or from their relatives and causes stress in them. As they also have to return the loan. For example, many students take educationl loan for their higher studies and remain stressful to return it.

To conclude, I acknowledge that moving to foreigh country to gain some experience have some disadvantages, but in my

perspective its advantages outweigh disadvantages. Most imortantly, it gives opportunity to make bonds and relationsships with other people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad or doing a work placement during undergraduate courses, and presents a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are generally relevant, such as increased exposure, cultural understanding, and career preparation versus financial stress and student debt. However, some arguments lack full development or extension. For instance, the point about cultural understanding is introduced briefly with phrases like 'increase the explore of the students,' and the counter-argument regarding financial burdens is somewhat simplistic. Nevertheless, the main task requirements are met with a consistent stance throughout, aligning best with a Band 6.0 descriptor profile.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion into distinct sections. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices and logical transitions, such as 'First and formost,' 'On the other, hand,' and 'To conclude.' However, some cohesive ties are mechanical or faulty, as seen in the double comma 'As a result,,' or awkward referencing like 'in resulting their chances.' Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes, but the flow between sentences within paragraphs can be choppy at times. These features correspond closely to the Band 6.0 descriptor for logical progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'undergraduating' (though misused), 'consequently,' and 'relevent.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'formost,' 'explore' used as a noun, 'out of the country' instead of abroad, 'foreigh,' and 'imortantly.' These errors occasionally require the reader to interpret the intended meaning, although they do not completely impede communication. The lexical range is minimally adequate and contains frequent inaccuracies, placing it firmly at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional-style constructions and dependent clauses ('As, students interact with other individuals...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, including 'All the universities undergraduating students should spend' and 'in resulting their chances to be promoted will considerably rise.' Punctuation errors are also present, such as unnecessary commas ('On the other, hand'). While the complex structures are often faulty and errors occur consistently, the meaning is generally clear and does not cause severe difficulty for the reader, which is characteristic of a Band 5.5 performance.
