Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of including study abroad or work placements in undergraduate courses, and the writer clearly states a personal position in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on work placements highlights valuable exposure to industry practices and real-world projects, while the disadvantages touch upon grades and homesickness. These ideas are generally relevant, but they remain at a surface level without being fully extended or supported by concrete examples or specific illustrations from personal knowledge or experience. The overall approach fits the Band 6 descriptor, as all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas are under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is organized into four paragraphs, following a traditional introduction, body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. However, coherence and cohesion are significantly hindered by major mechanical errors in punctuation, capitalization, and paragraph structuring. Many sentences run together without proper periods or capital letters, such as '...professional life .The Content student study...' and '...advantages and disadvantages.'. Cohesive devices are minimal or repetitive ('the other advantages', 'so the sumup is'), and referencing is sometimes unclear. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow within paragraphs is disjointed due to the lack of standard punctuation, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of ideas smoothly. This performance aligns best with Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a sufficient vocabulary range to communicate basic ideas related to education, employment, and studying abroad, employing terms like 'undergraduate courses', 'work placement', 'internship', and 'industry practices'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice, morphology, and spelling throughout the text, such as 'practicles' instead of 'practical/practice', 'intenship', 'alot', 'langauges', 'professonal', and 'difficlult'. Less common lexical items are attempted but often inaccurate or incorrectly formed. While communication is not entirely blocked, the high frequency of spelling and lexical errors prevents the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capacity to construct multi-clause sentences. However, grammatical accuracy is very weak. The text is marred by persistent, fundamental errors, including missing articles ('in student's professional life'), subject-verb agreement issues ('some students have... which cause effect their grades'), incorrect verb tenses ('students did', 'they got'), and severe punctuation faults such as run-on sentences and missing capitalization. Complex structures are frequently faulty, and errors occur in almost every sentence, causing noticeable difficulty for the reader. These features correspond directly to the Band 4 descriptor.
