Student answer (Band 5.0)
In recent years, there has been growing debat over all the universities should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing an intership. While there are certain drawbacks to include intership or exchange programmes, I believe the advantages far outweigh them.
One of the main benefit of including intership and exchange programme in undergraduates level, it provide expouser to the students and enable students to learn skills that help them in their future jobs with great experience. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of including study abroad or work placements in undergraduate courses, and takes a clear position that the advantages outweigh the drawbacks. However, the task achievement is significantly undermined by the severe length penalty, as the essay stops abruptly at 177 words, failing to reach the minimum 250-word requirement. Because of this, the ideas remain underdeveloped and the conclusion is missing. For example, the points regarding independence and skill acquisition are introduced but lack sufficient explanation and specific examples. Under the official band descriptors, a response that is severely under-length cannot progress beyond Band 5.0 for Task Achievement, regardless of the relevance of the initial ideas presented.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a basic organizational structure with an introduction and body paragraphs that attempt to sequence ideas logically using basic cohesive devices such as 'While', 'One of the main benefit', and 'Furthermore'. However, paragraphing breaks down as the essay cuts off prematurely mid-sentence in the second body paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of certain transitional patterns restricts the flow. There is a lack of overall progression due to the incomplete nature of the response. These features align with the Band 5 descriptors, where organisation is present but overall progression is impeded by inadequate and faulty cohesion as well as abrupt termination.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary related to education and employment, such as 'internship', 'exchange programmes', 'financial burden', and 'communication skills'. However, there are numerous lexical errors and incorrect word forms throughout the text, such as 'debat' instead of 'debate', 'intership' instead of 'internship', 'expouser' instead of 'exposure', and 'studiyng' instead of 'studying'. Collocations are also weak, for example, 'doing an internship in any company, hospital and lab' and 'learn them how to deal'. The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive, which places this response solidly in the Band 5 category due to noticeable errors in spelling and word choice that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using clauses introduced by 'While', 'When', and relative pronouns. However, grammatical accuracy is weak throughout the text. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'all the universities should include', 'One of the main benefit... it provide', and 'a student doing an internship... they learn'. Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, with missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and missing terminal punctuation in places like 'problems.the most obvious'. Because of the frequency of basic errors and faulty complex structures, the grammar fits the Band 5 descriptor.
