Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of including study abroad or work placements in undergraduate courses. A position is presented, stating that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. However, the response falls significantly short of the 250-word minimum, containing only 217 words. This under-length issue directly impacts task achievement, as the ideas are inadequately developed. For instance, the discussion on benefits is superficial, and the supporting examples, such as doing study at Canada, lack sufficient depth and breadth. Consequently, the response aligns best with Band 5 due to the limited development of ideas and failure to meet the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is often mechanical and repetitive. The student relies heavily on formulaic transition phrases such as 'Moving on benefits', 'To explain it more', and 'To clarify it more'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and poor referencing, such as 'ther will gain knowledge'. Overall cohesion is faulty, placing this response firmly in Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling throughout the text. Examples include 'vevery people' instead of various people, 'decsion' instead of decision, 'drawsbacks' instead of drawbacks, and 'accomadation' instead of accommodation. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'employable' and 'globally aware', but the frequency of spelling mistakes and lexical inaccuracies causes some difficulty for the reader, matching the descriptors for Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors, including preposition misuse ('at abroad', 'at foreign country'), article omissions ('expensive tickets of aeroplanes'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('People who are having homesickness, they cannot go'). Punctuation and sentence boundary errors also occur, such as in the concluding sentence where a dependent clause is punctuated as a complete thought. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader, supporting a Band 5 score.
