Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The candidate attempts to address the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of including study abroad or work placements in undergraduate courses. A position is presented, though it is somewhat unclear due to weak expression. While main ideas are introduced, they remain underdeveloped and are often vague, as seen in the second paragraph where the argument about future education is not clearly articulated. Furthermore, the final paragraph diverges into a generic platitude about failure being the key to success rather than properly synthesizing the arguments regarding the prompt. Consequently, these limitations place the response firmly at Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is organized into paragraphs, showing a basic attempt to structure the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions and confusing statements, such as 'it it common in nowdays student have learn new skill'. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes incorrectly, as seen with 'Although, some time student feel fear'. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow of ideas lacks smoothness. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between ideas. These features are characteristic of Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently restricted to high-frequency words. There are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation throughout the text, such as 'nowdays', 'eassy', 'diferent', 'expainsive', 'affort', 'expencive', 'dificulty', and 'in conclution'. These errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited lexical resource that is minimally adequate at best. While the writer attempts to use some topic-related vocabulary like 'education' and 'career', the high frequency of inaccurate forms keeps the score at Band 4.5, rounded to 4.5 or 5.0; given the strain caused by errors, Band 4.5 is appropriate, but sticking to half-bands, a solid Band 4 or generous 5 can be applied. Let us evaluate as Band 4.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex structures are almost invariably faulty, resulting in severe grammatical errors such as subject-verb agreement issues ('student have learn'), incorrect tense usage, and missing prepositions ('learning in abroad'). Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic ('in conclution', 'i believe'). Errors occur frequently throughout almost every sentence and frequently distort meaning, requiring the reader to guess the intended message. This level of grammatical control corresponds directly to the Band 4 descriptors.
