Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt only partially, attempting to discuss whether studying abroad and work placements should be included in university courses. However, the position is not always clearly maintained, and the ideas presented are limited and under-developed. For instance, the writer mentions that the unemployment rate in India is approximately 70 percent, but this point lacks proper context and logical expansion. Additionally, the development shifts abruptly between studying abroad and work placements without fully exploring the advantages and disadvantages of both as requested by the prompt. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to present a fully developed position, ensuring that every main idea is supported with clear, relevant explanations and examples rather than relying on generalized assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some organization, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the repetitive and mechanical use of 'subsequently' and 'moreover'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow within paragraphs is disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the line of argument. For example, the second paragraph crams multiple distinct ideas—unemployment rates, salary comparisons in computer applications, and decision-making classes—into one long, convoluted block of text. To improve, the writer must ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single central idea and uses a wider, more accurate variety of cohesive links to connect sentences smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word form that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'Nowdays', 'competiton', 'curiculam', 'foregin', 'bachlors', 'compute', 'decission', and 'placemnts'. The range of vocabulary is restricted, and attempts to use less common items result in awkward phrasing, such as 'giving class abroad' or 'assist of studying abroad'. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to standard spelling conventions, and ensure that word choices accurately reflect the intended meaning and context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing exhibits a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, articles, and prepositions, such as 'all uiversity should add', 'a period of the time', 'if a child has completes', 'is getting a job 25000 as in foreging he is getting 300000', and 'outweigh it disadvantages'. Punctuation is also problematic, with commas frequently misplaced, as seen in 'weighing up both the sides of the arguments i firmly, believe'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and distraction for the reader. To progress, the writer should practice forming accurate complex sentences and thoroughly review basic grammatical rules such as tense consistency and article usage.
