Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the merits and demerits of studying abroad or completing a work placement during undergraduate courses, thereby establishing a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the second body paragraph presents relevant ideas regarding top-ranking universities and future work placements, but the development remains somewhat general without deeper elaboration. Similarly, the points regarding educational systems in countries like India and Pakistan are introduced but lack comprehensive support. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to extend and fully develop all supporting arguments with more specific examples and thorough explanations rather than relying on brief assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Information and ideas are generally organised logically, and the writer attempts to guide the reader using cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Additionally', and 'To conclude'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always clear, as seen in abrupt transitions between paragraphs and awkward phrasings like 'On the disadvantages of it as'. Paragraphing is used, but the internal logical progression within paragraphs requires smoother linking. To move up, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices naturally and ensure that each paragraph flows seamlessly into the next without abrupt shifts in focus.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary such as 'multinational company', 'double edged sword', and 'myriads of positive points'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'educatees' instead of 'students', 'knowlege', 'intenational explosore', 'stuyding', 'pratical', 'umemployment', 'ti', and 'famiy'. While these vocabulary and spelling slips do not severely impede overall communication, they restrict the response. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their resource and demonstrate greater precision and accuracy in word choice, spelling, and collocations, avoiding awkward lexical combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional ideas. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Issues include awkward article usage, preposition errors such as 'moving to abroad' instead of 'moving abroad', subject-verb agreement problems like 'it resulting in to creating', and incorrect punctuation around quotation marks and spacing. Although these errors rarely completely obscure the intended meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent the grammar from reaching a higher standard. To improve, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences and exercise better control over complex grammatical patterns and punctuation.
