Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally, and it is important to note that the length requirement is not met, as the text falls short of the minimum two hundred and fifty-word count. The writer attempts to discuss whether studying abroad or doing work placements should be included in undergraduate courses, but the position is somewhat confused in the conclusion where the student writes that cons are more than prons, which directly contradicts the introduction. Ideas are limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive points about confidence and employment without sufficient elaboration or clear, well-supported examples. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met, maintain a clear and consistent position throughout the essay, and extend all main arguments with detailed explanations and relevant evidence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is some organisation present in the essay, with basic attempts at paragraphing and introductory statements like 'To intiate with' and 'In conclusion'. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by contradictory statements between the introduction and conclusion regarding the advantages and disadvantages. Cohesive devices are used rather mechanically and inaccurately, such as 'Another, benefit of this is', and referencing is occasionally unclear. Furthermore, paragraphs lack internal cohesion and fail to build a steady argument. To improve in this area, the writer needs to ensure ideas follow a logical sequence, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive ties, and maintain clear referencing throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'prospectives', 'tackel', and 'gloabl', but these attempts are marred by frequent spelling errors and awkward word choices. There are also noticeable errors in collocation and word form, for instance writing 'demrits' instead of 'demerits', 'net works' instead of 'networks', and confusing 'prons and cons' or mixing up 'pros and cons' with 'prons'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to standard spellings, and use words and collocations more naturally and accurately in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are often faulty. There are persistent errors in grammar, punctuation, and agreement across the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement errors like 'University education play', incorrect prepositions such as 'in abroad' instead of 'abroad', and awkward phrasing like 'the outweigh of advantages then disadvavtages'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces and unnecessary commas disrupting readability. To improve, the writer should practice using a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy, ensuring proper verb forms, articles, and prepositions are used consistently.
