Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a debate that says the internship or exchange semester should be mandatory during the undergraduate studies. To implement this, a draft has been submitted to the higher education management. In my opinion, this step will impose a positive impact to the student's confidence and their mindset. Moreover, students get exposure to the career field as an intern, and by enrolling into an exchange program, they learn new cultures and promote socialism.

Talking about the advantages of job internship, a student gains insights about the professional culture and how the academic knowledge is implemented in a practical field. Additionally, their confidence and interpersonal skills will get very much improved. A recent study shows that the students who has done internships during their bachelor's degree, tend to secure job more quickly than others. While surveying those fellows, they mentioned the internship as its reason.

On the other hand, exchange program has its own significance. First of all, it will boost the interconnectedness amongst students as they interact with different nationalities. Secondly, exchange program should be called as exhange cultural program, because they learn and try new things like traditional activities, conventional foods etc. Ultimately, that single semester of the studies will promote globalization.

On the contrary, there is a minor drawback of enforcing this policy. The students get stressed when they were not able to secure any of such. To overcome this, univeristy should play its part and make connections to the external organizations. To do this, student affairs department must actively approach the relevant entities in order to facilitate students.

At the end, the policy of implementing internship and exchange program, is very crucial for the development of student personality. I believe that before implementing this policy, university must take necessary measures to help students getting these opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both studying abroad and work placements, and clearly takes a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Relevant ideas are presented, such as gaining professional culture insights and cultural exposure, which places the response securely in the mid-range. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the discussion on internships is supported by a brief reference to a study, whereas the section on exchange programs tends to generalise without providing specific supporting examples or fully exploring the potential downsides beyond a brief mention of student stress. To reach a higher level, all main points require deeper extension, clearer examples, and more thorough analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, where each paragraph focuses on a distinct theme such as internships, exchange programs, and potential drawbacks. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, guiding the reader smoothly through the writer's arguments. Cohesive devices are generally used to indicate transitions, such as 'Additionally', 'First of all', and 'On the contrary'. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, and some cohesive links feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. To move towards top tiers of cohesion, the writer would need to employ more sophisticated, less predictable referencing and seamless transitions that make the underlying logical progression entirely unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating central ideas about higher education and professional development. There are successful attempts to use less common items and academic phrasing, such as 'professional culture', 'interconnectedness', and 'globalization'. Nonetheless, some vocabulary choices and collocations show slight inaccuracy, such as 'promote socialism' where cultural exchange is meant, or 'secure job' instead of 'secure jobs'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they are infrequent enough that they do not impede communication. Expanding the active control of precise collocations and more nuanced academic terminology would elevate this lexical performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating that the writer can handle various grammatical structures. There are some error-free sentences, but also a noticeable presence of grammar errors that reflect the midpoint level. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'the students who has done', prepositional misuse such as 'impact to the student's confidence', and awkward phrasing like 'when they were not able to secure any of such'. Punctuation and article errors also occur occasionally. While these issues rarely impede communication, they prevent the text from achieving a higher level of accuracy. A greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and stricter control over articles and prepositions are required to improve this score.
