IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Majority of undergarduational university courses must introduce a schedule which allows students spending time in either programmes :studying abroad or internships. This assay will analyse the both advantages and disadvantages and I argue that the former outweigh the later.
Universities should make rules for work placements and studying internationally as mandatory in their underagraduate courses. One of the main benefit is that people get exposure to new ideas, work zones and atmosphere which helps them to get out of their comfort zones and distractions,as a result they spends a valuable time in learing new things. Moreover, while interns spend a huge amount in the areas related to their fields, the amount of experience they gain is quiet higher than an ideal student, for instance in the USA pharmacist works as an intern before their acutal dispensery job which supports them with practical knowledge of the subjects they study.
On the other hand, making them compulsary will show a negative impact on some students as they may not afford it, as everything sums up with increase in expenses for travelling, processing fee, accomodations and many more when candidates moves to study abroad. Furthermore, migrating to a new country may result in language and communication bariers, which makes a course difficult to absorb and follow, for example students travelling to Germany from India are unable to understand the german language and gets frustated,if possible they are thinking to return back to their origin.
In conclusion, the negative aspects of studying abroad, like increased expenditure and language barriers, its positives aspects such as exposure to new environment and experience are greater. With sustainable practices its limitations can be minimised making international studies and internships a valuable part of the undergraduation courses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both sides of the question and state a clear view in the introduction: “the former outweigh the latter.” The body paragraphs give relevant reasons, including practical experience from placements and the costs and language barriers associated with studying abroad. The pharmacy example helps illustrate the value of workplace learning. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: the claim that placements provide more experience than being “an ideal student” is unclear, and the Germany example would benefit from a more precise explanation of how language difficulties affect students. Your conclusion supports your position, but its comparison of the advantages and disadvantages is not expressed clearly. More balanced development and a sharper explanation of why the benefits outweigh the costs would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the overall progression easy to follow. This provides a coherent framework, though some connections are mechanical and a few references are unclear. For example, “the former” and “the latter” in the opening require the reader to infer which option is meant, while “its limitations” in the conclusion could refer to either studying abroad or the whole proposal. Several ideas are crowded into long sentences, particularly in the paragraph about costs. Use clearer topic sentences and divide related points into more controlled sentences to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “work placements,” “practical knowledge,” “communication barriers,” and “expenditure.” These choices help convey the main ideas, and the meaning is generally recoverable. However, inaccurate spelling and word choice are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: examples include “undergarduational,” “compulsary,” “accomodations,” and “dispensery.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “spends a valuable time” and “increase in expenses for travelling.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than adding more ambitious terms. Proofreading spelling and checking how words combine would make your vocabulary more precise and consistent with the academic task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “while,” and “which,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction remain noticeable. For example, “they spends” should be “they spend,” and “candidates moves” should be “candidates move.” The opening phrase “allows students spending time” needs a structure such as “allows students to spend time.” The final sentence also has a faulty comparison: “the negative aspects … its positives aspects … are greater” does not clearly connect the two sides. Review agreement and clause structure, and use punctuation to separate long or joined ideas more accurately.
