IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The undergraduate courses at universites must incorporate duration of time spent on getting education from foreign nations or employment at workplaces. This would be beneficial for the future career prospects of the students.
To begin with, the educational institutions nowadays are more foucsed towards bringing out the best out of their students and adding aborad study or letting them work would give them a different apprach towards their career. The traditional way of eductation does not provide essential exposure required to understand the core knowledge of the subject one learns but to let students explore through gaining knowledge outside the ountry or giving them an opportunity to get work or job would result into a better understanding of the entire curriculum. For instance, many law colleges let their student work at court during vacation so that they learn about implementataion of law rather than just knowing about the legal theory. It enables the students to form a practical mindset.
Secondly, the significance of foreign study or work placement would enhance the confidence of the students and eventually let them decide what career they would like to pursue because they would be able to calculate future risks and rewards accodingly. The universities can begin with a pilot project and later after assessing the pros and cons they can introduce the amended undergraduate course. It would give more clarity to the students as to what they are going to learn and would it be beneficial or not. It might be challenging to execute it initially but in a long run the benefits would outweigh the hurdles.
To conclude, the inclusion of fraction of time used for studying abroad or doing work would help the education institutes or universities to bring out the best out of their undergraduates.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address the central question and maintain a clear view that the benefits of overseas study or work placements outweigh the difficulties. Relevant support includes the law-student example, which shows how court experience can connect theory with practice, and your point that placements may help students make career decisions. However, the advantages are developed more fully than the disadvantages: the challenge of implementation is mentioned only briefly, without explaining what the hurdles might be or why the benefits outweigh them. The proposal to begin with a pilot project is relevant, but its role in supporting your argument could be clearer. To strengthen the response, explain both sides more evenly and extend each main idea with a specific consequence or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted with “To begin with” and “Secondly,” and a concluding summary. The ideas generally progress from practical learning to confidence and career choice, so the reader can follow the argument. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. For example, the pilot-project suggestion appears within the paragraph about confidence and career decisions, although it introduces a separate point about implementation. The conclusion repeats the general benefit rather than drawing together the comparison of advantages and disadvantages. Group related ideas more tightly, use references such as “this experience” where the meaning is clear, and make the links between claims and examples more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “career prospects,” “practical mindset,” “curriculum,” and “pros and cons.” These choices help communicate the topic, and some less common expressions are attempted. However, inaccurate spelling and word choice are noticeable, as in “universites,” “foucsed,” “aborad,” and “accodingly.” There are also awkward collocations that reduce naturalness, such as “getting education from foreign nations,” “calculate future risks and rewards,” and “in a long run.” Aim for precise, conventional academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. For instance, “study at an overseas institution” and “assess career options” would express your ideas more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “so that,” and “rather than,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain. In “many law colleges let their student work,” the plural subject calls for “students”; “It might be challenging to execute it initially but in a long run” needs clearer punctuation and an article, as in “in the long run.” The sentence “It would give more clarity to the students as to what they are going to learn and would it be beneficial or not” also has faulty indirect-question structure; use “whether it would be beneficial.” Review agreement, articles, and embedded questions, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
