IELTS Writing Task 2 question

All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.

Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

All areas for undergraduate studies in university should consist of a global exchange program or a corporate experience.

Providing students with opportunities like studying for a specific duration in another country, or work in a corporate office during their studies can be very beneficial for them. I strongly believe that these initiatives should be given by educational authorities .

One of the first benefit of sending students abroad is that it provides global exposure to them which opens up their mind and help them think broadly. For example, a computer science student went to the United States of America for an exchange program will learn a lot in silicon valley as it is the tech hub of the world. Coming back home, the student will serve his country more confidently as they have the best knowledge.

Secondly, giving work opportunities to the students will allow them to gain hands-on experience with real-world projects. They will learn how actual things developed in the industry, which is definitely different from what they studied in their books. For instance, a chemical engineering student appointed in a factory where the actual chemical processes happen will teach the student a lot more than what he learned in the classroom. Such experiences will give students a real-life application of their subject. However, providing these facilities to students might have some disadvantages as well, it will be difficult for the students to manage their time as they have to do studies and work together. This will cause a decline in their grades.

In conclusion, giving opportunity to students like study aborad or a work agreement during their studies is very beneficial for them, Although their are some drawbacks as well like wastage of time and reduction in grades but that can be managed by the student. That is why I believe that the advantages of these initiatives outweighs the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, and you address both study abroad and work placements. The two main advantages—international exposure and practical experience—are relevant and supported with examples involving computer science and chemical engineering. This gives the response a solid, task-focused foundation. However, the examples are mostly hypothetical, and some claims are asserted rather than explained; for instance, the student returning from Silicon Valley is said to serve their country more confidently, but the link between the placement and this outcome could be developed. The disadvantage of time pressure and lower grades is also mentioned but receives less explanation than the benefits. More balanced development and a clearer comparison of the overall impact would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two paragraphs presenting benefits and a drawback, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally clear, with signposts such as “One of the first benefit,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” helping readers follow the argument. The main limitation is that the second body paragraph combines the work-placement benefit and the disadvantage, so the shift introduced by “However” feels abrupt and the ideas are less clearly separated. Some connections are also mechanical, and references such as “they” in the Silicon Valley example are not always precise about whether they refer to the student or students generally. Separating the drawback into its own paragraph and using clearer links between claims and examples would make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “global exposure,” “hands-on experience,” “real-world projects,” and “chemical processes.” These phrases help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “tech hub,” although some combinations are unnatural or imprecise: “corporate experience,” “work agreement,” and “actual things developed in the industry” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “aborad” and “wastage” also affect accuracy. Aim to use established collocations for education and employment, and check word forms and spelling. Greater precision in describing placements and their outcomes would improve the range without making the wording unnecessarily complex.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “which” and “as,” and most of the argument remains understandable. However, some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and punctuation reduce accuracy. Examples include “One of the first benefit” (plural agreement), “opens up their mind and help them” (agreement), and “a computer science student went … will learn” (inconsistent verb forms). The conclusion also contains “their are” and “advantages … outweighs,” while the sentence beginning “However, providing these facilities…” joins two independent ideas with a comma. Work on checking subject–verb agreement and maintaining consistent tense, and divide or punctuate long sentences more carefully. These corrections would make your varied structures more reliable.
