Student answer (Band 6.0)

All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time studying abroad or doing a work placement is a good approach and i believe its advantages are more than its disadvantages.

While studying an undergraduate course students are focused heavily on theory and assignments ather than practical learning. The environment also playsa significant role in development and learning of students so if all undergraduate students are offered some time studying abroad it would be beneficial for the students in terms of their learning and comprehension abilities. Moreover studying offers a chance to explore different cultures and ethnicities while interacting with people from all around the globe. Another important factor for studying abroad is different taching techniques and research based learning.

Work placement as part of undergraduate studies is a great opportunity and it could lead towards a very bright future and career in abroad with better opportunities in the future.

On the other hand if we look at disadvantages the only problem with studying abroad is some students might not be able to afford it or some people might find it difficul to integrate into other socities, culture or learning environments. Work placement in abroad could have some disadvantages as students might not be familiar with work life in different countries and might find it difficult to work there. Moreover locals might not be very welcoming towards the international students coming and taking jobs in their country.

While concluding it could be said that advantages of studying abroad or doing a work placement as part of undergraduate degree outweighs the disadvantages of it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and you return to this view in the conclusion. You address both study abroad and work placements, giving relevant benefits such as cultural exposure, different teaching methods, and career opportunities, as well as concerns about cost, integration, and local attitudes to international workers. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the work-placement benefits are asserted rather than explained, and the point about locals being unwelcoming is not connected clearly to whether placements should be compulsory. To strengthen the response, explain how each benefit or drawback affects students and support key claims with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, the next paragraphs discuss benefits and disadvantages, and a concluding sentence restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “While concluding” help signal the direction of the argument. This meets the lower-band expectations securely, and the paragraphing supports the main stages of the discussion. To make progression more consistently clear, group related points more deliberately and explain the connection between them. For example, the paragraph on benefits moves from practical learning to cultural exposure and then teaching methods without showing how these points build the case. The final disadvantage about locals’ attitudes also needs a clearer link to the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “practical learning,” “different cultures,” “research based learning,” and “work placement.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “integrate” and “career.” However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “career in abroad,” “taching techniques,” and “socities.” Repetition of “students,” “abroad,” and “different” also reduces flexibility. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your overall argument, but more precise phrasing and careful spelling would improve clarity. Build a bank of natural collocations for education, employment, and international experience, then check each phrase in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if all undergraduate students are offered some time studying abroad” and a contrast introduced by “On the other hand.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For instance, the opening sentence is awkwardly structured, and “advantages … outweighs” has a subject–verb agreement error. Several long sentences also need clearer punctuation, such as the sentence beginning “While studying an undergraduate course.” To improve, separate the opening claim into a clear sentence, check singular and plural subjects against their verbs, and use commas to mark introductory clauses. Aim to retain complex structures while making their relationships explicit.
