IELTS Writing Task 2 question

All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.

Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

All undergraduate students should spend some of their time studying abroad or have the opportunities for work placement. Altough students will often struggle with cultural and linguistic challenges while abroad, they will also gain significant exposure to job opportunities which will help them in careers. While, work placements can give students practical experience in their country which can help them to build skills.

The greatest benefit of studying abroad is that they will experience other part of the world due to which they can learn more skills which can help them to be a better person. Being in other country push the person to do that thing which they have not even imagined. For example, my cousin went to the UK after graduation and he got the job after a couple of months. Although he was struggling in his own country, So going out of comfort zone got him a job. The work placement also plays a vital role in his journey because he was skilled person and has practical knowledge.

The challenges undergraduate students can face to study some course is their financial conditions. Everyone can not afford to study abroad and they will left behind from those who can afford it. For example, when i was in my college my plan was to study abroad my undergraduate studies, but due to financial conditions i was not able to afford it and left studying in my own country.

The university should include a period of time so that students can spent some of the time studying abroad. It will give the students new life experiences and broader job opportunities. Some students will face financial issues but they can be catered in their country by work placements.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both the benefits and a drawback, and your final paragraph makes your position reasonably clear: you support including these experiences, while suggesting work placements at home can help students who cannot afford to travel. Relevant examples, especially your cousin’s experience and your own financial limitation, make the discussion personal and pertinent. However, the comparison of advantages and disadvantages is not fully developed. The claim that studying abroad creates “broader job opportunities” is asserted rather than explained, and the cousin’s story does not clearly show how a required undergraduate placement would produce the same outcome. Develop the reasoning by explaining who benefits, how the experience improves employability, and why those gains outweigh the cost and access concerns.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, one on financial challenges, and a conclusion. The reader can follow the main direction, and examples are placed alongside the points they support. Some connections, however, are mechanical or unclear. The opening lists several ideas without establishing how they relate, while “While, work placements…” is an awkward transition. In the cousin example, “Although he was struggling… So going out…” creates a broken connection between clauses, and “The work placement also plays a vital role in his journey” is not clearly linked to the earlier account. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make each paragraph develop one central point in a logical sequence, with clear references to people and experiences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “cultural and linguistic challenges,” “practical experience,” “financial conditions,” and “comfort zone.” These phrases show some range beyond basic vocabulary. However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive, which limits clarity and naturalness. For example, “experience other part of the world” and “learn more skills” are vague, while “help them in careers” is not a natural expression. “The challenges… to study some course” also does not express the intended idea clearly. Aim for more precise phrases related to employability, independence, and affordability, and check spelling and word forms such as “Although” and “cannot.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Although” and “because,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries. Examples include “Being in other country push the person,” “they will left behind,” and “students can spent,” where the verb forms or agreement are incorrect. The sentence beginning “Although he was struggling…” is also joined to “So going out…” in a way that creates faulty punctuation and clause structure. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and make sure each sentence has a complete, correctly connected main clause. More accurate control of these patterns would make your ideas easier to follow.
