All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, with the high influx of youth in colleges and universities, some people believe international studies or work placement should be included in their syllabus. This essay will review the pros and cons of the idea, and support that there are many advantages that comes with giving students international exposure and industrial experience.
One of the major disadvantages of work placement is it distracts the students from their acadmic pursuit. Most work placement especially in Nigeria is monitized. For instance, Nigeria breweries pays about #30000 to interns, hence some students might concentrate more on the financial gain, rather than the knowledge accusition. Additionally the international exposure can be quite expensive hence limited number of students will be able to afford it. This might result to social stratification amongst students.
However, there are lots of advantages associated with industrial exposure. Industrial experience help the stdents to have a deeper understanding of the things taught in the class. For instance, mechanical engineers on industrial training in an automobile company will undertand better how the car operates compared to just the theoretical aspect taught in class. It also helps students to have idea of what is achievable with their chosen field of study. International exposure also helps the students to meets with their collegues from other country. It helps students to bond, share experiences and make international collaboration.
In conclusion, although international exposure and industrial trainings has its own contrains such as financial challenge and distractions for some students, i believe there is a lot of advantages such as idustrial exposure and international interaction and collaboration which will help the students later in the future. I believe a blend of the two system is important and necessary for college students.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you support including international study or work placements, while acknowledging costs and possible distraction. You address both sides and give relevant examples, such as interns focusing on pay and engineering students learning in an automobile company. This meets the task well, but the advantages are developed more fully than the disadvantages, and some claims need clearer explanation. For example, you mention social stratification but do not explain how universities could reduce this risk. The conclusion also introduces a “blend of the two system” without clarifying what this means. To strengthen the response, explain why the benefits outweigh the drawbacks and develop each main point with a consequence or specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on disadvantages, a paragraph on advantages, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “Additionally,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and the main ideas are generally presented in a logical order. Some connections are less precise or feel mechanical, however. The introduction promises to “review the pros and cons,” while the conclusion repeats the main points without fully drawing them together into a comparison. Within paragraphs, several ideas are listed rather than linked through explanation—for instance, the points about international friendships, shared experiences, and collaboration. Use clearer referencing and show how each supporting detail develops the paragraph’s central claim.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “industrial experience,” “international exposure,” “financial gain,” and “social stratification.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “acadmic pursuit,” “monitized,” “knowledge accusition,” and “industrial trainings” are examples. Some expressions are also imprecise, such as “have idea of what is achievable” and “bond” in the context of students meeting peers internationally. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help you express the benefits and drawbacks without relying on repeated forms of “exposure” and “experience.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a concession in the conclusion (“although …, I believe …”) and a conditional result (“This might result …”). Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “advantages that comes,” “Industrial experience help,” and “it helps the students to meets.” There are also issues with articles, plurals, and sentence construction, as in “Most work placement” and “a lot of advantages.” Punctuation is occasionally awkward, particularly the missing space after “For instance,” and inconsistent capitalisation of “I.” Review agreement and noun forms, and proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
