IELTS Writing Task 2 question

All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.

Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Each and every university undergraduate courses should include a time period to spend to study as an international student or to do a job placement. The advantages of this would absolutely outweigh the disadvantages because these activities will not only boost there confidence in a social setting but also help them gather real world job experiences.

If an undergraduate student study abroad as an international student, they will not only gather knowledge there but also meet people of various countries, races and religions. They will enteract with which other, learn many things. It can expand their knowledge. Also, meeting new people can help reduce social anxiety. For instance, taking undergrad courses in homecountry will be within one's comfort zone. But taking the same degree from another country will have challanges and plenty of social interactions, which can be beneficial and is necessary to grow strong personalities.

Moreover, if someone is engaged in a real time job, it will help him/her gather real time working experiences that a textbook or a whole course can never provide. Working in an organisation can also help one to reduce their social anxiety. Successful task completion can boost confidence, which is essential for one to grow. For example, I learned coding from a reputed IT training institute in Dhaka. I used to be the best student in that course, however, when I joined an organisation as a coder, I found myself struggling to cope up. It took me around 6 months to overcome all my lackings. This job experience made me realise that no matter how extraordinary a course be, one can never found their potential unless he/she have a real time work experience.

To conclude, undergrad courses from all universities must provide potential time to study abroad or have a work placement. The advantages of this would absolutely outweigh the disadvantages because these activities will not only boost there confidence in social setting but also will help them gather real world job experiences.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you believe the benefits of overseas study or work placements outweigh the drawbacks. Both options are addressed, and the work-placement paragraph is supported with a relevant personal example about struggling to adapt after joining an organisation. The discussion of studying abroad is also relevant, particularly the point about meeting people and leaving one’s comfort zone. However, the response focuses almost entirely on benefits and does not explain what disadvantages might arise or why they are outweighed. Some claims, such as the effect on social anxiety, would also benefit from clearer explanation. Developing the counterargument and extending the less-supported ideas would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on overseas study and work experience, and a conclusion. The progression from the general claim to examples is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For instance,” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and some references are unclear, as in “They will enteract with which other.” The conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing together the two strands of reasoning. Use more precise referencing and vary how you connect ideas, while ensuring each paragraph develops one clear line of argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main points, including “social anxiety,” “comfort zone,” “work placement,” and “potential.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “successful task completion” and “real world job experiences.” However, several inaccurate or unnatural choices reduce precision: “gather real time working experiences,” “cope up,” and “overcome all my lackings” do not sound natural in this context. Spelling errors such as “enteract,” “challanges,” and “there” for “their” are also noticeable. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they limit the control and range expected at a stronger level. Prioritise accurate collocations and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If an undergraduate student study abroad…” and a longer sentence beginning “This job experience made me realise…”. Most of the meaning remains clear, but some errors occur in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “Each and every university undergraduate courses” has a singular/plural mismatch, while “one can never found their potential” uses an incorrect verb form. In “if someone is engaged in a real time job, it will help him/her,” the pronoun reference is also awkwardly constructed. Review subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and break up long sentences when needed. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
