IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Undergraduate courses offered by the universities should include a time period in which the students can go to abroad in an exchange program or do internship. While giving a break period may result in some drawbacks, I believe the advantages in this time that can be achieved far outweigh the disadvantages.
When a student get to do work placement, they can know about how the theoratical knowledge is applied in the practical work. In addition they can also learn the workplace ethics, work processes, career dynamics. Besides this they can improve their skills that will help them in the future for building a successful career. Moreover, going to abroad for study will open the door for gaining knowledge extensively. This wil expand their knowledge also they can connect with professors and students there which can be helpful for further study in the abroad or they can conduct reseach by following those techniques. Thus, it comes with broad opportunity for the students.
However, it has some drawbacks like not all students can afford to go abroad. Because of this situation they can feel inferior to those who can bear the expense for going abroad. It also comes with safety issues for example there was a student in my university who went to abroad in an exchange program but got invloved with the bad influences. This made a serious concern regarding his life and career. Furthermore not all company offers an internship for running students which leads to insufficient scope. Despite these concerns i believe these can be addressed by proper councelling and maintaing code of conduct. In addition university or government can sponser the underpriviliged students so that they can study abroad for a period time. Likewise company can give placement opportunity to the students by maintaing a structured policy.
Conversly doing a internship or studying abroad during an undergraduate course are far more significant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you believe the benefits of placements or overseas study outweigh the drawbacks, and you address both sides of the question. Relevant advantages include applying theoretical knowledge, developing workplace skills, and making academic connections; you also recognise affordability, safety, and limited placement availability as concerns. The response therefore covers the task well, but some points are more fully explained than others. For example, the safety concern is illustrated with an anecdote, yet the link between that incident and the general risks of required placements could be clearer. The final sentence restates your view but does not develop the comparison. To strengthen the argument, explain more explicitly why the benefits are greater and support each main point with a specific consequence or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to benefits, drawbacks and a concluding position. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main sides of the argument, and signposts such as “However,” “Furthermore” and “Despite these concerns” guide the reader. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the benefits paragraph shifts from workplace learning to overseas study and research without clearly connecting these ideas. Some linking is mechanical or imprecise, and the final paragraph is only one sentence, so it does not provide a developed conclusion. Improve cohesion by grouping related points, using clearer references to earlier ideas, and making the conclusion briefly weigh the benefits against the disadvantages rather than simply repeating your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “work placement,” “workplace ethics,” “career dynamics,” “safety issues” and “structured policy.” These choices help communicate the topic, and some less common expressions show an attempt to be precise. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, such as “theoratical,” “reseach,” “invloved,” “councelling” and “sponser.” Several phrases are also unnatural or unclear, including “go to abroad,” “for running students” and “broad opportunity.” Aim to learn common academic collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would make your ideas easier to understand and help you express distinctions between overseas study, internships and work placements.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “While giving a break period may result in some drawbacks” and a conditional explanation beginning “so that they can study abroad.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “When a student get” needs subject–verb agreement, while “not all company offers” has a plural agreement problem. The sentence beginning “Because of this situation” is a fragment, and “This wil expand their knowledge also they can connect” joins ideas without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. Practise checking each sentence for a complete clause, correct agreement and clear links between clauses; this will make your varied structures more controlled.
