All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.

Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that undergraduate students should get an opportunity for either studying outside of the country or working in a work place between the courses in universities. I think that this situation is highly advantageous as it could bring a number of merits in terms of diversity in environment and a wonderful experience a student could get. However, it has some drawbacks like cost of programmes will increase and it demands more time to finish the course.

In this fast paced world, exchanging programmes between universities world wide are most popular nowadays. It provides opportunity to the students from developing or underdeveloped countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan to get an experience to explore the first world countries and build network in a versatile environment. Working in a corporate office from student life will aid the students to build their capacity for furture life. For instance, developed countries like Germany, the U.S.A are highly recommending internship programmes collaborating between universities and multi-national companies.

However, this issue has some demerits like it will make the course much longer. For example, if an undergrade student aims to complete the course in due time, it will be challenging for him to continue. Another problem is that the cost of courses will increase to arrange an exchange programme which will eventually create burden on the government.

In conclusion, though this situation will create some problems like an increase in cost or longer course, it will be highly beneficial for the students who will like to get experience from diversities. So I think its advantages are higher.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and you address both sides of the question. The benefits you identify—international exposure, networking and workplace experience—are relevant, while increased costs and a longer course provide appropriate counterpoints. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, you mention that students from developing countries can explore “first world countries,” but do not show how this experience improves their studies or future prospects. The cost argument is also brief and focuses on the burden on government without considering who would pay or how this might affect students. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation or a specific example to make your case more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, a paragraph on drawbacks and a conclusion. The progression from advantages to disadvantages is easy to follow, and signposts such as “However” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. To make the flow more flexible and precise, improve links between individual claims and their explanations. For instance, the move from international exchange to corporate internships in the benefits paragraph feels abrupt, and “For example” introduces a claim about Germany and the USA without clearly connecting it to the preceding point. Use clearer referencing and develop each paragraph around a more unified line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “diversity,” “versatile environment,” “capacity,” “exchange programme” and “burden.” These choices help communicate your main ideas, and some attempts at less common language are evident. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “working in a work place,” “exchanging programmes,” and “get an experience to explore.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “furture” and “undergrade,” which reduce precision. Aim for natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for the benefits and costs would also help you explain your position with greater clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if an undergrade student aims to complete the course in due time, it will be challenging for him to continue.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “It provides opportunity to the students,” the article and plural construction need attention; “programmes … are most popular” also needs a more appropriate article or determiner. The opening sentence is awkwardly structured, and “it demands more time to finish the course” has an unclear subject. Practise accurate articles, agreement and sentence construction, while retaining your attempts to use complex clauses.
