IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
All academic institutions must introduce a specific time in their undergraduate degrees for studing abroad or any work related activities. I concur with the notion that the merits are quite high than demerits of student's visiting abroad and gaining work experience in their undergrad studies.
Mostly universities do not offer any placements for visiting abroad and gaining work experience in the form of internship throught their degrees. This affects on student's career growth, bcause, the basic requirement of the job is having hands on experience. Due to this reason, the students feel overwhelmed and cant get the job. On the other hand, highly reputed universities have their own timeline for sending student abroad for research purposes or offer work as an internee in any industry or company. This improves the student's capability and confidence in their respected fields which makes them more resilient and practical and it also helps them in pursuing higher studies and in the job market.
In Contrast, there are few reasons that cannot be ignored. Students who may find an opportunity to go abroad or do any intership, sometimes they cannot maintai the balance and ignore their ongoing studies. This results in their degree delays and they may extend their semester and pay the expenditures. While the financal cost is beared by their parents which may put extra burden on their shoulders.
To put it in a nutshell, I whole heartedly go with the notion that there are many benefits a student can get if their instituion allow any timeline for visiting abroad or work while it totally depends upon the student how he manage and keep balance in gaining practical experience and his ongoing studies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you believe the benefits of overseas study or work experience outweigh the drawbacks. You address both sides, explaining that placements can build confidence and practical skills, while also noting possible study delays and financial pressure on parents. These are relevant points, and the conclusion returns to your view. However, some ideas need fuller development to make the argument more convincing. For example, the claim that students “cant get the job” is broad and would benefit from a specific explanation or example of how placement experience improves employability. The disadvantages are also presented briefly, without considering how common or manageable these problems are. Developing and supporting these points more precisely would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. The contrast between the two sides is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “In Contrast,” and “To put it in a nutshell” help show the direction of the argument. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. The opening of the benefits paragraph shifts from universities not offering placements to the effect on students, then to what highly reputed universities do; the relationship between these points could be made more explicit. The final sentence also combines several ideas, making the conclusion harder to follow. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and keep each paragraph focused on a more clearly developed line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “work experience,” “internship,” “career growth,” “practical,” and “financial cost,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the merits” and “resilient.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or awkward, as in “the merits are quite high than demerits,” “affects on student's career growth,” and “work as an internee.” Spelling errors such as “studing,” “throught,” “maintai,” and “financal” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural academic combinations and check spelling carefully; for instance, use “outweigh the disadvantages,” “affects students’ career prospects,” and “complete an internship.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “Students who may find an opportunity … sometimes they cannot maintain the balance” and a relative clause in “which makes them more resilient.” This shows some range, and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, there are several errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns. For example, “the merits are quite high than demerits” needs a comparative form such as “the advantages are greater than the disadvantages,” while “This affects on student's career growth” has an incorrect verb pattern. The final sentence also has agreement and clause-control problems in “how he manage and keep balance.” Review comparatives, subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, then proofread punctuation to make complex sentences more controlled.
