IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A survey of library users gives an overview of their categories and their satisfaction level from different components of the library.

Firstly, in chart we can see full-time undergraduate students cover a large part of user by 44%, a significant space is occupied by full-time postgraduate users. While other parts are covered by part-time postgraduate students (16%), 8% by distance learning students and at last 7% by Academic staff.

Secondly, their satisfaction varies with each component. Like talking about the library opening hours 65% are completely satisfied, 35% are moderately satisfied. Moving towards the Staff's Helpfulness, it explains that most of the users (95%) are very satisfied which indicates that staff is totally cooperative towards the users and a very small proportion (5%) is fairly satisfied, while for books and journals availability about half of the users are completely satified while are the remaining are fairly satisfied with available stock and some of them 10-20% are not satisfied. Lastly for wi-fi reliability, the chart shows about the satifaction of users from very satisfied to fairly satisfied (48% & 33%) but 19% of the users are not satisfied which means during the Library time, wi-fi is not 100% reliable.

Hence, by summarizing the information of survery we can say library provides a good user experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both visuals and identify the main user group correctly: full-time undergraduates account for 44%, while academic staff are the smallest group at 7%. You also report several satisfaction figures accurately, including 95% very satisfied with staff helpfulness and 65% with opening hours. The concluding view that the library provides a good experience is broadly supported by the high satisfaction results. However, the overview is not sufficiently precise: it does not clearly compare the strongest and weakest satisfaction areas, and the phrase “a significant space” leaves the full-time postgraduate figure (25%) unstated. The discussion of books and journals combines their results rather than distinguishing them, and “about half” obscures the exact differences. A sharper overview and more selective, explicit comparisons would make the report more complete and developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the two visuals, describes user categories, moves to satisfaction, and ends with a summary. Signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Moving towards,” and “Lastly” help readers follow the shift between topics. This gives the report a coherent arrangement, but some linking feels mechanical, and the long satisfaction paragraph packs several categories and comparisons into one sentence. For example, the sentence beginning “Moving towards the Staff’s Helpfulness” continues through books, journals, and dissatisfaction without a clear break. Grouping related results into shorter sentences or separate paragraphs would improve progression. Also, “Hence, by summarizing” repeats the function of the preceding overview rather than adding a distinct final comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing proportions and opinions, including “significant,” “proportion,” “moderately satisfied,” and “reliability.” These choices show an attempt to move beyond basic repetition, and the intended meaning is generally clear. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for a data report: “cover a large part of user,” “a significant space is occupied,” and “completely satisfied” are less suitable than standard chart language such as “account for,” “make up,” and “very satisfied.” There are also spelling errors, including “satified,” “satifaction,” and “survery,” and “Library time” is unclear in context. More accurate collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more precise and consistently appropriate to the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in “which indicates that staff is totally cooperative.” The main comparisons remain understandable, but some sentences are awkwardly constructed or contain errors in articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries. For example, “in chart” needs an article, and “full-time undergraduate students cover a large part of user” has an unclear singular/plural structure. The extended sentence beginning “Moving towards the Staff’s Helpfulness” joins several ideas with commas and “while,” making the relationships difficult to track. There is also a faulty construction in “while are the remaining are fairly satisfied.” Use shorter, complete sentences and check articles, agreement, and clause structure to improve control.
