Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the task by summarizing the provided chart and table. However, the overview is missing, which is a key requirement for Task 1. While you have selected and reported some main features, the comparison between categories is limited. For instance, you list percentages for user categories but do not effectively contrast them (e.g., noting that full-time undergraduates are the largest group compared to the minority represented by academic staff). Furthermore, the response ends abruptly mid-sentence, which leaves the summary incomplete. To improve, ensure you include a clear overview of the main trends and complete all sentences to provide a full report of the data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into two paragraphs, which is appropriate for the task. However, the progression of ideas is mechanical. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas together; for example, the second paragraph is essentially a list of figures without transitions or logical flow. The use of referencing is also weak, as the text relies heavily on repetitive sentence structures. To achieve a higher band, you should use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'furthermore', 'meanwhile') to connect your observations and ensure that the information is presented in a more fluid, logical manner.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, often relying on the words provided in the prompt. Phrases like 'got 65 number of' are unnatural and imprecise. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or an attempt to use varied vocabulary to describe trends or data points. To improve, you should incorporate more precise reporting verbs and nouns (e.g., 'account for', 'constitute', 'the majority', 'a significant proportion') and avoid repeating the same sentence structures. Expanding your range of descriptive language will help you convey the information with greater clarity and sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The chart... show' (subject-verb agreement) and 'The higher number of percentage is of' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is also inconsistent, and the final sentence is incomplete, which significantly impacts the grammatical integrity of the response. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of complex structures and the presence of frequent errors limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and practicing the construction of complex sentences will help improve your accuracy and range.
