IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the different kinds of people that made use of the library, while the table shows the level of satisfaction attained by these people.
Overall, it can be seen that the full-time undergraduates accessed the library the most, with 7% of the academic staff being the least. Also, most of the library attendees showed a high level of satisfaction with the way the library functions. 95% of the library users attest that their greatest satisfaction came from the help they received from the library staff.
From the chart, apart from the full-time undergraduates who were the highest to visit the library, the full-time and part-time postgraduates were the second and third most populated in the library, with percentages of 25 and 16 respectively.
These library users exhibited several forms of satisfaction in the number of hours the library open, the help they get from staff and the availability of books, journals and wifi. Only a small proportion showed that they were not satisfied with the library services. These were found in the availability of journals (20%) and wifi (19%). About 40% showed fair satisfaction with the availability of books while 35% showed partial satisfaction towards the library opening hours and access to journals. Furthermore, 95% showed full satisfaction with the assistance they received from staff, 65% for the duration of hours the library opened and the list proportion in this category are those that were very satisfied in the the availability of journals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the data, including the user categories and satisfaction levels. However, the analysis is somewhat uneven. While you identify the highest and lowest user groups, the description of the table data is slightly confusing. For instance, the phrase 'the list proportion in this category are those that were very satisfied in the availability of journals' is unclear and does not accurately reflect the data provided. To improve, ensure that comparisons are more precise and that you clearly distinguish between the different satisfaction categories (very satisfied, fair, etc.) rather than grouping them in a way that obscures the actual figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'From the chart', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader. However, the progression of ideas within the final paragraph is somewhat disjointed. The transition between discussing satisfaction with library services and the specific percentages is occasionally mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next and that referencing (e.g., 'these') clearly points back to the intended noun phrase without ambiguity.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'attained', 'exhibited', and 'proportion'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'the list proportion' is an incorrect usage, and 'most populated in the library' is slightly awkward when referring to user categories. There is also a minor error in 'the the' repetition. To improve, aim for more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary choices are consistently natural and accurate in an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as '7% of the academic staff being the least' (which is grammatically incomplete) and 'the library open' (should be 'the library is open'). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent verb tenses will help improve your score.
