Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and table depicts the data of a survey of users of a library in a certain university.

Overall, the users of the library is given in percentage in a pie chart with the largest proportion as full-time undergraduate students and the second highest as postgraduates and eventually decreasing number of user percentages. Additionally, the the satisfaction rate of the library facilities is mostly marked as very satisfied to fairly satisfied with only one few (books, journals and wi-fi) as not satisfied.

Firstly, the most library visitor in the pie is full-time undergraduates as the proportion is less than a half (44%) while the second and third position is taken by full-time postgraduates(25%) and part-time postgraduates(16%), respectively. Additionally, the other users are almost less than 10% of the whole users percentage.

Secondly, the users rated the highest satisfaction for stuff's helpfulness(95%) while the other services are lesser as the lowest rated is journal availability(45%). Moreover, the fairly satisfied ratings are all less than a halve and dissatisfaction ratings are lower than 20% with opening hours and helpfulness both rated 0% for not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and selected relevant data points to support your summary. However, the response lacks a degree of precision in reporting the data. For instance, stating 'less than a half' for 44% is accurate but vague, and 'almost less than 10%' is confusing phrasing. To improve, ensure you compare the data more explicitly, such as noting that the satisfaction for 'staff helpfulness' is more than double that of 'journal availability'. The report covers all parts of the task, but the analysis could be more analytical rather than just listing figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Additionally' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'eventually decreasing number of user percentages' in the overview, which does not flow well. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the categories of users and the satisfaction ratings could be smoother. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent manner, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a Task 1 report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'proportion', 'satisfaction rate', and 'availability'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'one few' is not standard English, and 'stuff's helpfulness' should be 'staff's helpfulness'. You also use 'halve' (a verb) instead of 'half' (a noun). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring correct spelling and word forms. The current range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the users of the library is', 'the most library visitor... is full-time undergraduates') and awkward phrasing ('the other users are almost less than 10%'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, pay closer attention to pluralization and subject-verb agreement, and try to vary your sentence structures with more complex, error-free constructions.
