IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart and table depict the data of a survey of users of a library in a certain university.
Overall, users of the library are given in percentage in a pie chart with the largest proportion as full-time undergraduate students and the second highest as postgraduates and eventually decreasing number of user percentages. Additionally, the satisfaction rate of the library facilities is mostly marked as very satisfied to fairly satisfied with only a few (books, journals and wi-fi) as not satisfied.
Firstly, most library visitors in the pie chart are full-time undergraduates as the proportion is less than a half (44%) while the second and third positions are taken by full-time postgraduates(25%) and part-time postgraduates(16%), respectively. Additionally, the other users are almost less than 10%(distant learning 8% and academic staff 7%) of the total percentage of users.
Secondly, the users rated the highest satisfaction for staff helpfulness(95%) and lowest for dissatisfaction(0%). The second highest satisfaction is for opening hours (65%) with no dissatisfaction(0%). Conversely, other services for satisfaction are lower with lowest rating for journal availability(45%). Moreover, the fairly satisfied ratings are all less than a half(50%) and dissatisfaction ratings are up to 20%(books, journals, wi-fi with 10%,20%,19% respectively).

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the pie chart and the table. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates and the high satisfaction levels for staff helpfulness. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the categories. For instance, noting that the combined percentage of postgraduates (41%) is nearly equal to that of full-time undergraduates (44%) would provide a more insightful comparison. Additionally, the description of the table data is slightly repetitive; focusing on the contrast between the highest (staff helpfulness) and lowest (journal availability) satisfaction ratings would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Additionally', and 'Conversely' to guide the reader through the information. However, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, in the second paragraph, the phrase 'the other users are almost less than 10%' is a bit awkward. Improving the flow between sentences by varying your linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would help elevate the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'satisfaction rate', and 'dissatisfaction'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'eventually decreasing number of user percentages' and 'other services for satisfaction are lower', which sound slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations. For example, instead of saying 'the other users are almost less than 10%', you could use 'the remaining categories account for less than 10%'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the data of a survey of users of a library in a certain university' (which is slightly wordy) and 'the other users are almost less than 10%'. Punctuation is generally handled well, though there are occasional spacing issues after parentheses. To improve, focus on reducing wordiness and ensuring that your subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the report.
