Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided visual data comprise a pie chart illustrating the distribution of library users by category and a table detailing satisfaction levels with various library services at a university.

Overall, the majority of library users are full-time undergraduates, while academic staff constitute the smallest group. Satisfaction is highest for staff helpfulness and lowest for availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi.

According to the pie chart, full-time undergraduates account for 44% of library users, followed by full-time postgraduates at 25%, part-time postgraduates at 16%, distance learning students at 8%, and academic staff at 7%. Thus, over two-thirds of users are full-time students.

The table reveals that 95% of users are very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff, and 5% fairly satisfied, with no dissatisfaction. In contrast, availability of journals shows only 45% very satisfied and 20% not satisfied. Similarly, reliability of wi-fi has 48% very satisfied and 19% not satisfied. For opening hours, 65% are very satisfied and none dissatisfied. Availability of books records 50% very satisfied and 10% not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all parts of the task. You provided a clear overview of the main trends and supported your summary with relevant data from both the pie chart and the table. You effectively highlighted the most significant features, such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates and the contrast between high satisfaction with staff and lower satisfaction with journals and Wi-Fi. The information is accurate and well-selected, ensuring the reader gets a comprehensive picture of the survey results without unnecessary detail. This meets the requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by source (chart and table). The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'According to,' 'In contrast,' and 'Similarly' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the demographic data from the satisfaction metrics. The flow is natural, and the relationship between the different parts of the data is clearly established throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report. Phrases like 'visual data comprise,' 'distribution of library users,' and 'detailing satisfaction levels' are used accurately. You avoid repetition by using varied terminology to describe the data. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band; for example, using more varied reporting verbs or nuanced descriptors for the data trends would enhance the quality. However, the current range is sufficient and used with good control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your writing displays a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as the opening sentence which uses a participial phrase. There are no significant errors in punctuation or syntax, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. The control over subject-verb agreement and tense usage is consistent throughout the response. To aim for a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions or more advanced relative clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
