Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The circular chart represents the different categories of users in the library, and the tabular representation demonstrates the satisfaction levels of the users.

According to the pie-chart, the largest majority is of full-time undergraduate users which accounts for 44%. The academic staff and distance learning users stand between 7-8%. The part-time postgraduate users accounts for 16% and 25% users are full-time postgraduate.

The table depicts the satisfaction level of the users for different criteria. For the opening hours of library, 65% users are very satisfied and 35% are fairly satisfied while none of them is unsatisfied. The highest majority of users are very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff which accounts for 95%, and insignificant percentage of users are fairly satisfied. In the case of availability of books and journals, there is an inconsiderable difference between their satisfaction level.

Moreover, 48% users are very satisfied with the reliability of wi-fi, while other 33% and 19% users are fairly and not satisfied respectively.

Overall, full-time undergraduate covers the largest majority of users and academic staff covers the lowest. On the other hand, the users are highly satisfied with the helpfulness of staff and not satisfied with the availability of journals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting. For instance, you state that 'none of them is unsatisfied' regarding opening hours, but the data likely shows a small percentage or a blank space that should be interpreted carefully. Additionally, you mention 'not satisfied with the availability of journals' in your conclusion, but the table provided does not explicitly label the categories as 'journals' in a way that supports this specific claim. To reach a higher band, ensure that your data interpretation is precise and that your summary reflects the provided information exactly without over-generalizing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each visual, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different data sets. You use some cohesive devices such as 'According to', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between the description of the pie chart and the table is smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the data points could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. You use terms like 'tabular representation', 'insignificant percentage', and 'reliability'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'largest majority' (which is redundant, as 'majority' already implies the larger part) and 'inconsiderable difference'. Using 'inconsiderable' is not standard in this context; 'negligible' or 'minor' would be more appropriate. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'the largest majority is of full-time undergraduate users' (should be 'consists of') and '25% users are' (should be '25% of users are'). Additionally, there are occasional issues with article usage and pluralization. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the higher bands. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will help improve your accuracy.
