IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie graph demonstrates the percentage of library users, and the table compares the satisfaction in five different categories at a university.
Overall, in the pie graph, full-time undergraduate students occupied the highest segment, whereas academic staff had the lowest. However, the table shows helpfulness of staff had the maximum proportion for very satisfied users, while the availability of journals had the greatest number of users not satisfied.
To embark with, distance learning for all courses had only 8% of learners using the library, which was the second least, and the first lowest was for academic staff at 7%. Moreover, full-time postgraduate and undergraduate students had the uppermost users at 25% and 44%, respectively. The part-time postgraduate students had 16% proportion.
On the other hand, library opening hours had 65% very satisfied users with 0% for not satisfied and 35% for fairly satisfied. The helpfulness of staff also had the highest percentage for very satisfied visitors with 95% and 0% for not satisfied. The not satisfied users percentage maximum for availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi, with 20% and 19%, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of both the chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the prompt. However, the comparison between the two data sets is somewhat limited; while you mention the categories and the satisfaction levels, you could have integrated the information more effectively by linking specific user groups to their satisfaction levels if the data allowed, or by providing a more cohesive synthesis. The report covers all requirements, but the analysis remains slightly descriptive rather than analytical.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', and 'moreover' to connect ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, such as 'To embark with', which is not a standard academic phrase. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the pie chart data from the table data. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the link between the two paragraphs could be strengthened to improve the overall flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'occupied', 'proportion', and 'satisfaction'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'the first lowest' and 'the uppermost users', which are not standard collocations. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. You successfully avoid repetition, but the range of less common lexical items is somewhat limited.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'whereas' and 'while' to create contrast. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the not satisfied users percentage maximum for availability', which is missing a verb and has awkward phrasing. Additionally, 'To embark with' is grammatically incorrect in this context. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the response, and the errors do not impede communication. A wider variety of error-free complex structures would be needed for a higher score.
