Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie graph demonstrates the percentage of library users, and the table compares the satisfaction in five different categories at a university.

Overall, in the pie graph, full-time undergraduate students occupied the highest segment, whereas academic staff had the lowest. However, the table shows helpfulness of staff had the maximum proportion for very satisfied users, while the availability of journals had the greatest number of users not satisfied.

To embark with, distance learning for all courses had only 8% of learners using the library, which was the second least, and the first lowest was for academic staff at 7%. Moreover, full-time postgraduate and undergraduate students had the uppermost users at 25% and 44%, respectively. The part-time postgraduate students had 16% proportion.

On the other hand, library opening hours had 65% very satisfied users with 0% for not satisfied and 35% for fairly satisfied. The helpfulness of staff also had the highest percentage for very satisfied visitors with 95% and 0% for not satisfied. The not satisfied users percentage maximum for availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi, with 20% and 19%, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of both the chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the prompt. However, the comparison between the categories could be more analytical. For instance, while you listed the percentages, you could have grouped the data more effectively to highlight the contrast between the high satisfaction levels for staff helpfulness versus the lower satisfaction regarding journal availability. The response covers all parts of the task well, but a more integrated approach to comparing the data sets would elevate the score further.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You used cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'however', 'moreover', and 'on the other hand' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the pie chart data from the table data. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, such as 'To embark with', which is not a standard academic phrase. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'occupied the highest segment' and 'maximum proportion' are used effectively. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'the first lowest' and 'the uppermost users'. These do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your repertoire of academic vocabulary related to data description—such as 'constituted', 'accounted for', or 'predominated'—would help you achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the not satisfied users percentage maximum for availability', which lacks a verb, and 'To embark with', which is an awkward introductory phrase. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring that all sentences have a clear subject-verb structure and avoid slightly awkward phrasing in your introductory clauses.
