Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart shows the percentage breakdown of library users in the university whereas the table displays the satisfaction in percentage of the library users.
Overall, the full-time undergraduates made up the biggest slice, whereas academic staff used the library the least amongst all. The helpfulness of the staff was rated the most satisfied among others and the non availability of the journals was considered the least satisfied followed by wi-fi reliability. Although the availability of books was fairly balanced.
In figures, full-time undergraduates represented 44% of the total regular users, followed by 25% of full-time post graduates. Part-time post graduates also have a decent slice with 16% but academic staff were the least vistiors of the library at 7% only.
On the other hand, the satisfaction level of the library users could be seen by the helpfulness of the staff with 95% people very satisfied with the service and 5% fairly satisfied with it. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of both the chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data. However, the report could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the categories. For instance, you mention the satisfaction levels but do not explicitly link them back to the user groups, which would provide a more integrated analysis. Additionally, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed; for example, you mention '0% of non satisfaction' for opening hours, which is accurate, but the phrasing could be more formal to reflect the data-driven nature of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'on the other hand', and 'followed by' to guide the reader through the data. However, the transition between the user categories and the satisfaction levels is slightly abrupt. Using more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the two datasets would improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the demographic data from the satisfaction metrics, which helps the reader navigate the information effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'percentage breakdown', 'decent slice', and 'reliability of the wi-fi connection' are used effectively. To reach a higher band, try to avoid repetitive phrasing such as 'satisfied' and 'satisfaction' by using synonyms like 'contentment', 'approval', or 'positive feedback'. Additionally, some word choices are slightly informal, such as 'decent slice', which is better suited to casual conversation than an academic report. Increasing your use of precise, academic collocations will enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is generally clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'academic staff were the least vistiors' (should be 'least frequent visitors') and '95% people' (should be '95% of people'). Additionally, the sentence 'Although the availability of books was fairly balanced' is a fragment and should be connected to a main clause. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching the higher bands where error-free complex structures are more consistent.
