Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart and the table illustrate the information regarding the results of a survey about the percentage of catagories and satisfaction of library users at a university.

Overall, it is evident that in the bar chart, full-time undergraduates constitutes the most and distance learning represents the least among all the distribution of the results. Additional information is provided by the table which shows generally declining trend from very satified to not satisfied across all library facilities.

Furthermore, in the bar graph, full-time undergraduates represent 44%, full-time postgraduate shows 25%, part-time postgraduate records 16%, and other two categories such as distance learning and academic staff contribute almost 15%.

In the table, library opening hours decreased sharply from 65% very satisfied to 0% not satisfied, helpfulness of staff fell dramatically from 95% very satisfied to 0% not satisfied, percentage of other three facilities such as reliability of wi-fi, availability of books and journals steadily declined.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of both the chart and the table. You successfully identified the largest and smallest user groups and noted the general trend in the table. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, you mention a 'declining trend' in the table, but you do not provide enough specific data points to support this effectively, and the description of the table data is slightly inaccurate (e.g., stating 0% for 'not satisfied' for all categories is a misinterpretation of the data provided). To improve, ensure you select key data points to illustrate your comparisons rather than listing them, and double-check your interpretation of the figures to ensure accuracy.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on the chart and table respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Furthermore', and 'In the table' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the bar chart data and the table data could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'other two categories such as distance learning and academic staff', which could be phrased more precisely to improve the logical progression of your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrate', 'constitutes', 'represents', and 'declined'. There are some minor errors, such as the spelling of 'catagories' and 'satified'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. To reach a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repeating the same verbs. For example, instead of 'shows' or 'represents', you could use 'account for', 'comprise', or 'make up' to add variety to your descriptions of the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'full-time undergraduates constitutes' (subject-verb agreement) and 'percentage of other three facilities' (missing article). Additionally, the sentence 'full-time undergraduates constitutes the most and distance learning represents the least among all the distribution of the results' is slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve the accuracy of your writing.
