Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided pie chart and table illustrates information regarding the outcomes of survey of library users at a specific university.

Overall, it is evident that the full-time undergraduates accounted for the largest proportion, while the academic staff and distance learning remained the least prominent categories. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You successfully identified the largest and smallest categories in the chart and highlighted key satisfaction levels from the table. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the data points rather than just listing them. For example, noting that full-time undergraduates were more than double the proportion of part-time postgraduates would demonstrate a higher level of analytical skill. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main trends, which is essential for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'Regarding,' and 'Turning to the table' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two different data sources. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; some sentences feel slightly disconnected. For instance, the transition from the pie chart data to the table data is functional but could be more sophisticated to improve the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'accounted for the largest proportion,' 'constituted the higher percentage,' and 'least prominent categories' are appropriate for an academic report. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as '16% of share in the library,' which is slightly unnatural. Using '16% of the total' would be more precise. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'percentage' or 'share' to avoid repetition and demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few grammatical errors, such as 'The provided pie chart and table illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error: should be 'illustrate') and 'the higher percentage of 44%' (should be 'the highest percentage'). Despite these slips, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles. Most of your sentences are accurate, which provides a solid foundation for further improvement.
