Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given pie chart and table illustrate the results of a survey of different categories of library users and their satisfaction levels at a university. The data is depicted in percentages.

Overall, users who use library services are divided into five categories, and their satisfaction levels checked upon five criteria with very, fairly, or not satisfied respectively.

It is clearly seen from the pie chart that slightly less than a part is full-time graduates who used library which was 44%. Full-time postgraduates were one-fourth who visited the library. The part-time postgraduates contribution was 16% only. Last but not least, distance learning and academic staff accounted for 8% and 7% respectively.

Moving towards the table, students are highly satisfied with staff which is 95%, however the percentage for availability of books and journals is almost half then this ratio. The opening hours are quite satisfying 65% very satisfied and 35% fairly satisfied. A few students are not satisfied with the availability of books, journals, and wifi which is 10%, 20%, and 19% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided a clear overview. You covered all categories of users and the satisfaction criteria. However, the analysis of the table is slightly underdeveloped. For example, when discussing the 'availability of books and journals', you mention it is 'almost half' of the staff satisfaction, but you do not explicitly state the figures (48% very satisfied) to support this comparison. Additionally, the description of the pie chart is a bit repetitive in structure. To reach a higher band, ensure that you not only report the data but also synthesize the information by making more direct comparisons between the different satisfaction levels across the categories.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'It is clearly seen', and 'Moving towards the table'. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Last but not least' is slightly informal for an Academic Task 1 report. Furthermore, some referencing is a bit unclear, such as 'slightly less than a part', which is vague. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contributed', 'accounted for', and 'satisfaction levels'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'checked upon five criteria' is not standard academic English; 'assessed against five criteria' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'almost half then this ratio' is grammatically awkward and imprecise. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing percentages and proportions. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase', 'decrease', and 'proportion' will also help.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'Full-time postgraduates were one-fourth who visited the library' is awkward; a better construction would be 'Full-time postgraduates accounted for one-quarter of library visitors'. There are also minor issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'The part-time postgraduates contribution' (missing apostrophe) and 'satisfied with staff which is 95%' (should be 'with the staff, at 95%'). Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve your score in this criterion.
