Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart depicts different categories of library users at a university, and the table shows the percentages of user satisfaction.
Overall, the full-time undergraduates is the dominating group accessing the library, whereas the academic staff has the lowest share. Library staff have the highest satisfaction rates, while people are least sataisfied with the availability of journals.
While the full-time undergraduate's share in the total library users is the largest, at 44%, the academic staff stood at 7%. The proportions of part-time postgraduate and full-time postgraduates was at 16% and 25%, respectively.
Distance learning students of all courses accounted for 8% of total users.
Regarding the satisfaction of library users, 95% of the people are very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of both the chart and the table. You successfully identified the largest and smallest user groups and highlighted key satisfaction trends. However, the report could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the data sets. For instance, you mention the satisfaction rates but do not link them back to the user categories, which would provide a more integrated analysis. The overview is clear, but ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed; for example, you mention '5% of the users are fairy satisfied with the staff', which seems to misinterpret the table data. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the chart and table respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct data sources. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'conversely', and 'whereas' are used to link ideas effectively. However, the progression between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing of data could be more fluid. Despite these minor issues, the information is easy to follow and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'depicts', 'dominating group', and 'accounted for'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'sataisfied' and 'fairy', which are distracting but do not impede communication. The range is sufficient to convey the information clearly, but there is limited use of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations. To reach a higher band, try to vary your reporting verbs and use more precise descriptive language when discussing trends or proportions. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the full-time undergraduates is the dominating group') and awkward phrasing ('Availability of books has 40% of people who are fairly satisfied'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. You have attempted to use complex structures, but they are not always error-free. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy and allow for a higher score in this criterion.
