Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie-chart and the table elucidates the information about the survey of library usage by university members and students. The categories included are (Full-time undergraduate, Full-time postgraduate, Part-time postgraduate, Distance learning and the academic staff).
Overall, it is clear that the library is used mostly by the Full-time undergraduates and least by the Academic staff. Moreover, a large number of users were satisfied by the helpfulness of staff whereas, the users were least satisfied with the availability of journals.
Full-time undergraduates dominate the chart by 44% followed by Full-time postgraduates by a figure of exactly 25% and then by the Part-time postgraduates by a moderate percentage of 16%. In addition, library usage by the distance learners and academic staff was least prefered accounting for 8 and 7 percent respectively.
In terms of satisfaction level, 95 members were fully satisfied by the helpfulness of staff and dominates the table with this digit. Almost half of the people were happy with opening hours and availability of books (65 and 50 respectively). Among all the other factors a large chunk of users were not satisfied with availability of journals i.e. 20. Not only this the reliability of wi-fi was also not good and 19 people were not happy with it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the table, providing a clear overview and supporting details. You made relevant comparisons, such as noting the dominance of full-time undergraduates and the specific areas of dissatisfaction. However, the task achievement is slightly limited by the lack of clarity regarding the table data. You mention '95 members' and '65', but it is unclear if these are raw numbers or percentages, as the prompt does not specify. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly contextualized and that you consistently distinguish between the two different data sets provided in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'In terms of'. However, the transition between the pie chart analysis and the table analysis could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus, which you have largely achieved here. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'dominate the chart', 'moderate percentage', and 'large chunk of users' are effective. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'least prefered' (should be 'least preferred') and 'with this digit' (which is not the correct way to refer to a statistic). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are strictly appropriate for a formal report. Avoid informal phrasing like 'happy with' when 'satisfied with' is more suitable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. There are some grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The given pie-chart and the table elucidates' should be 'elucidate') and punctuation errors (e.g., the comma placement in 'In terms of satisfaction level, 95 members...'). Additionally, 'Not only this the reliability...' is missing a necessary auxiliary verb or structure. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentence structures are punctuated correctly.
