Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie chart illustrates the different categories of users of a university library, while the table shows their levels of satisfaction with five aspects of the library.

Overall, full-time undergraduates formed the largest proportion of library users, whereas academic staff represented the smallest group. In terms of satisfaction, the helpfulness of staff received the most positive feedback, while the availability of journals and reliability of Wi-Fi had the highest levels of dissatisfaction.

Full-time undergraduates accounted for 44% of library users, followed by full-time postgraduates at 25%. Part-time postgraduates made up 16%, while distance learners and academic staff represented 8% and 7%, respectively.

Regarding satisfaction, 95% of users were very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff, with the remaining 5% fairly satisfied. Library opening hours also received a high level of satisfaction, at 65% very satisfied and 35% fairly satisfied. Half of the respondents were very satisfied with the availability of books, compared with 40% who were fairly satisfied and 10% who were not satisfied. By contrast, only 45% were very satisfied with journal availability, while 20% were not satisfied. Wi-Fi reliability had similar results, with 19% reporting dissatisfaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly identified the main features of both the pie chart and the table, providing a logical overview and supporting it with accurate data. The comparison between user categories and satisfaction levels is well-integrated. You successfully highlighted the key trends, such as the high satisfaction with staff helpfulness versus the dissatisfaction with Wi-Fi and journals. The information is well-selected and relevant, meeting the requirements for a clear summary of the provided data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the user categories from the satisfaction data. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in terms of', 'regarding', and 'by contrast' are used naturally to link sentences and ideas. The flow is smooth, and the information is presented in a way that is easy for the reader to follow. There is a clear overall structure, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by detailed body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report. Phrases such as 'formed the largest proportion', 'accounted for', and 'represented' are used accurately. You avoid repetition by using varied terminology to describe the data. While the vocabulary is precise and fits the context well, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, perhaps by incorporating more varied reporting verbs or nuanced descriptors for the data trends. However, the current range is more than sufficient for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a high level of grammatical control. You use a variety of complex structures, such as the introductory participial phrase 'Regarding satisfaction' and the use of subordinate clauses. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. There are no significant errors that impede communication, and the overall quality of the writing is very high, reflecting a strong command of English grammar.
