Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart compares different groups of library users, while the bar chart reveals information about the users satisfaction levels with the library at a university.

At a glance, it is clear that the full-time undergraduate students make up the largest share in groups of library users, whereas overall satisfaction is highest regarding helpfulness of staff.

Looking at the pie chart in detail, the full-time undergraduate students account for 44% of total library users. The full-time postgraduate students hold the second position at 25%. Meanwhile, part-time postgraduate, distance learners, and academic staff contributed 16%, 8%, and 7% of total users, respectively.

Regarding the bar chart, upon a closer inspection, although only 5% of users voted of "Fairly satisfied", 95% of users satisfied with helpfulness of staff. 65% of users are "Very satisfied" with the library opening hours. There was some dissatisfaction regarding the journal and book availability, and 20% and 10% of user in those respective sectors voted for "Not satisfied". Meanwhile, more than 50% users were not fully satisfied with the reliability of Wi-Fi signal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the bar chart. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the charts. However, the analysis of the bar chart is slightly inconsistent; for example, you mention '95% of users satisfied with helpfulness of staff' but do not clarify if this includes both 'very' and 'fairly' satisfied categories. Additionally, the comparison of the bar chart data could be more precise, particularly when discussing the 'not satisfied' figures. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to their specific categories and that comparisons between the different satisfaction levels are more explicitly stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each chart, and a concise overview. The use of cohesive devices such as 'meanwhile', 'regarding', and 'at a glance' helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the transition between the two charts could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. To improve, ensure that the relationship between sentences is always clear and avoid slightly mechanical transitions. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'account for', 'hold the second position', and 'dissatisfaction'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'voted of' instead of 'voted for' and 'users satisfied' missing the verb 'were'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more varied reporting verbs and precise collocations related to data interpretation would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as '95% of users satisfied' (missing 'were') and '10% of user in those respective sectors' (should be plural 'users'). Additionally, there is a missing preposition in 'voted of'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that all necessary auxiliary verbs are included in your sentences.
