Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the categories of library users. The table, however, demonstrates the percentage of library user satisfaction based on different services provided. Overall, the full-time undergraduate category is the largest group of library users, while the academic staff category is the smallest. In addition, the users are extremely slaked by the helpfulness of the staff members, but they are very unsatisfied by the availability of the journals.

The table represents the satisfaction level of the users as percentages on a scale ranging from very satisfied to not satisfied. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of both the chart and the table. The overview clearly highlights the largest and smallest user groups, as well as the extremes in satisfaction levels. You have made relevant comparisons, such as noting that journal availability had the highest dissatisfaction rate. However, the response could be improved by grouping the data more effectively rather than listing every percentage point, which makes the report feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on synthesising the data to highlight trends rather than simply transcribing the figures into sentences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary of the data. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the user categories from the satisfaction levels. While the flow is generally good, some of the sentence structures are slightly repetitive in their reliance on 'users were' or 'users are'. Improving the variety of transition phrases would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'illustrates', 'demonstrates', and 'reliability' are used correctly. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation. For example, you used 'slaked' instead of 'satisfied', and 'second most poor' is not a natural collocation; 'second lowest' or 'second least satisfactory' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'the library comprise of' should be 'the library comprises'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and ensuring precise word choice will help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the library comprise of' (subject-verb agreement) and '95% users that were very satisfied' (should be '95% of users were'). The use of 'absolutely nobody left unsatisfied' is slightly informal for an academic report. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with greater precision.
