Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given pie chart and table lays down the results of a survey undertaken of library attendants at a university.

Multiple types of library service receivers exist, ranging from undergraduates to staff of academics. Full time undergraduates form to be the biggest chunk of users which is 44% of the total users i.e. approximately half of the whole. On the other hand, the academic staff and distance learning individuals comprises the least, standing at a mere 7% and 8% respectively. The level of availing the facility differs in postgraduates depending on the type of post graduation one is doing. Full timers that takes the service is 25% while the part timers contributes as 16% share of all.

The level of satisfaction by library users varies from one factor to another. It's easy to say that across different users , the helpfulness of the staff satisfies all individuals with 95% rating as very satisfied and the remaining as fairly satisfied. However, availability of journals and wi-fi reliability poses a problem, despite being satisfying approx. 80% individuals, 20% users are not happy with it.

Library opening hours and availability of books keep up with almost 90% of users with no issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided relevant comparisons. You covered both the categories of users and the satisfaction levels. However, the report could be improved by providing a clearer overview or 'summary' paragraph at the beginning, which is essential for a Band 7+. While you mention the biggest and smallest groups, the description of satisfaction levels is slightly imprecise; for instance, stating '95% rating as very satisfied' is accurate, but the grouping of 'remaining as fairly satisfied' is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with precision and that the overview highlights the most significant trends rather than just listing facts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized into two distinct paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'However', and 'despite being', which assist in the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the two paragraphs is somewhat abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data. The overall progression is clear, but the cohesion could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'biggest chunk of users' and 'availing the facility' are understandable, though 'chunk' is slightly informal for an academic report. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'library attendants' (which usually refers to staff, not users) and 'level of availing the facility'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding informal phrasing. Using more varied vocabulary to describe trends and proportions would also help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'The given pie chart and table lays down' (subject-verb agreement error: 'lay'), 'Full timers that takes the service' (should be 'take'), and 'part timers contributes' (should be 'contribute'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and pluralization. Incorporating more error-free complex sentences would also demonstrate better control over your grammar.
