Student answer (Band 6.0)

The following graphics depict the results of a survey of library attendees at a university.

Overall, it can be observed that full time undergraduate and full time undergraduate users were by far the largest community using the dependences, whereas academic staff and distance learners were the smallest proportion. Regarding library user satisfaction, very satisfied and fairly satisfied were both the most positive trend.

Full time graduates represented the highest percentage of users with a 44% followed by full-time graduates with a 25% of atendees. In comparison to academic staff and distance learning (all courses) that accounted to 7% and 8%, respectively.

The option very satisfied remained as the most positive trend during the survey, accounting to a 95% regards helpfulness of staff and a 65% in library opening hours options. By contrast, not satisfied percentages bottomed out with a 20% and 19% for availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the breakdown of user categories and satisfaction levels. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, you state that 'full time undergraduate' and 'full time undergraduate' were the largest groups, which is repetitive and confusing. Furthermore, you mention 'full time graduates' twice with different percentages (44% and 25%), which misrepresents the chart data. While you attempt to make comparisons, the lack of precision in interpreting the figures hinders the clarity of the report. To improve, ensure you carefully cross-reference the labels in the chart with the data points to avoid factual errors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on different aspects of the data. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In comparison to', and 'By contrast' are used to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally disrupted by the factual errors mentioned in the task achievement section. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the comparison between groups is grammatically awkward. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'accounted for', and 'bottomed out'. However, there are some word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'using the dependences' (likely meaning 'facilities') and 'most positive trend' when referring to satisfaction categories. Spelling is generally accurate, but the repetition of 'full time undergraduate' and the confusion regarding the user categories suggest a need for more precise terminology. To improve, focus on using vocabulary that accurately describes statistical trends and data relationships.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'accounted to 7% and 8%' (should be 'accounted for') and 'a 44% followed by full-time graduates with a 25% of atendees' (spelling error 'atendees' and awkward phrasing). The use of articles and prepositions is inconsistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional usage after verbs like 'account' would be beneficial.
