Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The pie chart and table illustrate the results of a survey conducted among library users at a university.
Overall, the full-time undergraduate students accounted for the highest proportion of library users, whereas academic staff and distance learning courses represented the smallest shares. In terms of satisfaction, the helpfulness of staff received the highest level of satisfaction, whereas the availability of journals and reliability of Wi-Fi had comparatively lower satisfaction levels.
An analysis of the chart reveals that full-time undergraduate students accounted for the largest proportion, at 44%. Full-time postgraduates were the second-largest group, making up 25% of users. Part-time postgraduates represented 16%, while academic staff and distance-learning students accounted for 7% and 8%, respectively.
From the table, it is evident that most of the users are satisfied with the helpfulness of staff, where 95% of the users are very satisfied, and 5% of them are fairly satisfied. Moreover, 65% of the library users are very satisfied, whereas 35% of the users are fairly satisfied with the library opening hours. However, 50% of the users are very satisfied, 40% of the library users are fairly satisfied, and 10% of them are not satisfied with the availability of journals. By comparison, satisfaction with journals and Wi-fi was lower, with 20% and 19% of users, respectively, reporting that they were not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of both the chart and the table. Your overview clearly identifies the key trends, such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates and the varying levels of satisfaction. You have effectively selected and reported the most significant data points, such as the percentages for user categories and the satisfaction levels for different library services. The comparison between categories is well-handled, and the data is accurately represented. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently link the data points to the specific categories mentioned in the table, as the final sentence regarding Wi-Fi satisfaction could be more explicitly connected to the table data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that separate the chart data from the table data. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you have used a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'whereas', 'in terms of', 'moreover', and 'by comparison'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. The flow between sentences is natural, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, making the writing easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'accounted for the highest proportion', 'represented the smallest shares', and 'comparatively lower satisfaction levels' are used accurately. You have successfully avoided repetition by using synonyms such as 'group', 'users', and 'shares'. While the vocabulary is appropriate and precise, it is functional rather than highly sophisticated. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate a few more precise collocations or less common lexical items related to data analysis, such as 'constituted the bulk of' or 'a marginal percentage'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your writing displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('whereas academic staff... represented the smallest shares') and participial phrases. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is strong. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The use of tense is consistent throughout the report. To reach the highest band, you could aim for even greater flexibility in sentence structure, perhaps by varying the way you introduce data comparisons to avoid a slightly repetitive structure in the final paragraph.
