Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and table illustrate information about library users at a university and their satisfaction. There are three levels of satisfaction very satisfied, fairly satisfied and not satisfied.

Overall, full-time undergraduates account for the highest proportion of library users, whereas academic staff account for the smallest proportion.

Initially, 95% of users are very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff and the rest are fairly satisfied. Moreover, 50% of users are very satisfied with the availability of books and 10% are not satisfied and rest are fairly satisfied. Meanwhile, 48% of library users are very satisfied with the reliability of wi-fi and 19% are not satisfied, rest are fairly satisfied. In addition, 45% of library users are very satisfied with the availability of journals and 20% are not satisfied, the rest are fairly satisfied. Finally, 65% of users are very satisfied with library opening hours and the rest are fairly satisfied, none of them not satisfied. On the other hand, 44% are full-time undergraduates and nearly half of them are full time postgraduates. Although there is one percent difference in distance learning and academic staff, the distance learning is more than that at 8% and part-time graduates account for twice the proportion of distance learners.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of both the chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data. However, the response lacks a logical grouping of information. You jump between the satisfaction levels and the user categories without a clear transition. To improve, ensure you group related data points together rather than listing them sequentially. While you covered all parts of the task, the comparison between the user categories in the final sentence is slightly confusing and could be more clearly articulated to show the relationship between the percentages provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the flow between sentences is somewhat mechanical. You rely heavily on simple transition words like 'Initially', 'Moreover', and 'Meanwhile', which makes the writing feel like a list rather than a cohesive report. The progression of ideas is clear, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the data points. Additionally, the final paragraph is quite dense, and the transition from the satisfaction data to the user categories is abrupt, lacking a clear signpost to indicate a shift in focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. You used terms like 'proportion', 'account for', and 'satisfaction levels' appropriately. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the reliance on 'account for' and 'rest are'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for describing data trends, such as 'constitute', 'comprise', or 'make up'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally accurate, though it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'none of them not satisfied' (which should be 'none of them were not satisfied' or 'none were dissatisfied') and 'the distance learning is more than that at 8%'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a lack of control over more complex grammatical structures. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and using more precise prepositional phrases when describing statistical data. Your punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences would benefit from more careful construction to avoid run-on structures.
