Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart and table provided information about the result of a survey of library users at a university. Overall, it was evident that students accounted for the largest proportion, particularly full-time undergraduates, compared to academic staff. Library users were most satisfied with the helpfulness of staff, whereas availability of books was rated lower among the library users. Regarding the pie chart students belonging to different categories were differently distributed, full-time undergraduate users accounted for the largest percentage, at 44% followed by full-time and part-time postgraduates which represented 25% and 16% respectively. In contrast, distance learning and academic staff users showed a similar figure and were the lowest contributing users, with 8% and 7% respectively. Turning to the table, facilities that the library opening hours and helpfulness of staff by users were fully satisfied. 65% and 95% users rated higher to these facilities, whereas 35% and 5% were fairly satisfied with these. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and selecting key data points from both the chart and the table. You successfully identified the largest user group and highlighted the main trends in satisfaction levels. However, the analysis of the table is slightly cluttered. For instance, the sentence '65% and 95% users rated higher to these facilities' is confusing because it does not clearly link the percentages to the specific categories mentioned. To improve, ensure that comparisons are more precise and that the data is grouped logically rather than listing figures in a way that obscures the main trends. Overall, the response is relevant and addresses the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on the chart and table respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Regarding', 'In contrast', and 'Turning to the table' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow within the second body paragraph is somewhat mechanical. The transition between the data points is occasionally abrupt, and the use of pronouns or referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'The same pattern could be observed in fairly satisfied' is a bit vague. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clearer transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'distributed', 'contributing users', and 'satisfied'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'rated higher to these facilities' (should be 'rated these facilities higher') and 'not satisfied by users around 10%' (should be 'dissatisfied by around 10% of users'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. Incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. For example, 'facilities that the library opening hours and helpfulness of staff by users were fully satisfied' is syntactically awkward and unclear. Additionally, there are issues with punctuation and article usage, such as 'the largest proportion of users was fully satisfied at 50% and 45% in availability of books and journals respectively'. Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear, and the errors do not cause significant confusion for the reader.
