Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie chart illustrates the proportions of different categories of users of a library, while the table shows their levels of satisfaction with five aspects of the library’s services.

Overall, full-time undergraduates constituted the largest proportion of library users, whereas academic staff accounted for the smallest. In terms of satisfaction, the helpfulness of staff received the most positive ratings, while the availability of journals and reliability of Wi-Fi were comparatively less satisfactory.

Full-time undergraduates represented 44% of library users, followed by full-time postgraduates at 25%. Part-time postgraduates accounted for 16%, while distance learners made up 8%. Academic staff were the smallest group, at just 7%.

Regarding satisfaction, 95% of users were very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff, with the remaining 5% being fairly satisfied. Opening hours also received favourable ratings, with 65% very satisfied and 35% fairly satisfied. By contrast, only 45% were very satisfied with the availability of journals, while 20% were dissatisfied. Wi-Fi reliability had a similar pattern, with 48% very satisfied and 19% not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively covers all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview that highlights the main trends in both the pie chart and the table. The data is accurately selected and reported, with relevant comparisons made between the user categories and the satisfaction levels. For instance, you correctly identified the largest and smallest user groups and contrasted the high satisfaction with staff helpfulness against the lower satisfaction regarding journals and Wi-Fi. The information is well-developed, and the report is balanced, ensuring that all key features are addressed without unnecessary detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas. You have used an effective structure, starting with an introduction and an overview, followed by two body paragraphs that group the data logically—one for user categories and one for satisfaction levels. Cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in terms of', 'by contrast', and 'followed by' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two distinct data sets, making the report easy to follow and coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases such as 'constituted the largest proportion', 'accounted for', and 'received favourable ratings' demonstrate a good command of academic language. The vocabulary is natural and appropriate for a report of this nature. While the range is solid, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or collocations related to data analysis could elevate the response further. However, the current usage is accurate and contributes to a clear, professional tone throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a high level of grammatical control. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses in the opening sentence and the comparative structures in the second paragraph. Punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a strong grasp of English grammar suitable for this task.
