IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart and table illustrate the results of a university survey of library users.
Overall, the pie chart provides the categories of library users, while the table gives us the data on user satisfaction in percentages.
The types of people using the library are divided among six categories: full-time undergraduate students, which dominated the field at 44%, that is followed by full-time postgraduates at 25%, whereas part-time postgraduates hold 16%, which is significantly higher than the last two categories, distance learning and academic staff at around 10%.
Through the table, it is brought to knowledge that people were highly satisfied with the helpful staff and mostly satisfied with opening hours of the library. In contrast to that people were not very satisfied with the availability of journals and 20% were dissatisfied with it, same was true for wi-fi facilities with a percentage of around 19% people being not satisfied. While the availability of books was mostly very satisfied with a 10% of people dissatisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing both the pie chart and the table. You successfully identified the main features, such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates and the varying levels of satisfaction. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the categories and the satisfaction data. For instance, you mention the satisfaction levels but do not explicitly link them to the user categories, which would have provided a more integrated overview. The overview is present but could be more analytical rather than just descriptive. Overall, you have provided a clear summary of the key information presented in the visual aids.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a body paragraph for the chart, and a body paragraph for the table. You use some cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'in contrast to', and 'while' to connect ideas. However, the transition between the two paragraphs is somewhat abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, but some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'it is brought to knowledge that', which sounds unnatural. Improving the flow between sentences and using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dominated', 'significantly higher', and 'dissatisfied'. However, there are some instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'it is brought to knowledge' and 'mostly very satisfied with a 10% of people'. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication but prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding wordy, unnatural expressions. Expanding your vocabulary to include more varied ways to describe statistical trends would also be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'that is followed by' (which should be 'followed by') and 'same was true for wi-fi facilities with a percentage of around 19% people being not satisfied'. These errors are noticeable but do not cause significant difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, ensure that your relative clauses are used correctly and work on reducing minor errors in preposition use and sentence construction. The punctuation is generally accurate throughout the text.
