Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart and table provide data about the results of a survey of library visitors at a university.

Overall, the full-time undergraduates had the largest share for using the library, while the academic staff showed less interest in visiting the library. Most library visitors are satisfied with the helpfulness of library staff and least satisfied with the availability of journals.

Firstly, for visiting the library, the full-time graduates had the largest share with 44%, while the full-time postgraduates had a participation of 25%. Additionally, the part-time graduates accounted for 16%, as compared to the distance learning category, which contributed 8%, and the academic staff class had the lowest proportion of 7%.

Furthermore, most visitors of the library were satisfied with the helpfulness of the staff that stayed at 95%, while the library opening hours and the availability of books accounted for 65% and 50%, respectively. The reliability of Wi-Fi and availability classes contributed to 48% and 45%, respectively. Only the library opening hours and the helpfulness of staff were the classes in which no user showed dissatisfaction. In contrast, 20 users were not satisfied with the availability of journals, which had the highest proportion related to the "not satisfied" section.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response effectively addresses the task by summarizing the main features of both the chart and the table. You have successfully identified the key trends, such as the dominance of full-time undergraduates and the high satisfaction levels regarding staff helpfulness. The comparison between categories is clear, and the data is used accurately to support your points. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently distinguish between categories; for instance, you referred to 'full-time graduates' when the chart likely indicates 'full-time undergraduates'. Additionally, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific categories provided in the prompt to avoid any ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the chart and the table respectively. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' helps guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two distinct data sets. To improve, consider using a wider variety of linking phrases to avoid a slightly mechanical feel, and ensure that the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is seamless. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'largest share', 'accounted for', and 'lowest proportion' are used appropriately in the context of data reporting. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as using 'classes' to refer to categories or survey items, which is slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations—such as 'constituted the majority' or 'exhibited a high level of satisfaction'—would enhance the sophistication of your writing and help you achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally sound. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'most visitors of the library' (should be 'to the library') and 'the helpfulness of staff that stayed at 95%' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more varied complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or relative clauses, to demonstrate a wider grammatical range while maintaining the high level of accuracy you have already achieved.
